  1. The Language of Art: some vocabulary

  2. Vocabulary of Art • Visual Elements • Lines are either straight or curved. Straight lines are vertical, horizontal or oblique

  3. Shapes are either geometric or organic. They are also called Form or Mass if they occur three-dimensionally

  4. Color has three aspects: • Hue: the actual color on the color wheel. • Value: dark/light, • Chroma: bright/dull • Colors are related to each other by their placement on the color wheel. Complimentary colors, warm/cold colors

  5. Texture: actual and visual, rough and soft

  6. Space and direction: Overlapping and Perspective (Linear, Atmospheric, Isometric)

  7. Foreshortening

  8. Design Principles • Balance: symmetrical (formal)

  9. asymmetrical (informal)

  10. Movement

  11. Rhythm: Repetition

  12. Pattern: Alternation or Variation

  13. Contrast • Unity • Emphasis

  14. Media Drawing: Dry Media, Liquid Media

  15. Painting: Encaustic, Fresco, Tempera, Oil, Watercolor, Acrylic, Other
