  1. Welcome. Please take the information sheets from the front as you arrive.

Iceland Trip Information EveningFriday 18th – Wednesday 23rd July 2014

  2. Where is Iceland?
  3. Travel Itinerary: Day of Departure Students to come to school and assemble on the main drive at 08:00 on Friday 18th July. The coach will be loaded and we will try to leave as soon as possible. Arrive at Gatwick at about 09:45. Check in and then I would advise everybody to have a hot meal whilst we wait for our flight. WOW Air flight WW202 departing at 12:20 and arriving at Keflavik, Iceland at 14:25 (local time- 1 hour ahead of us) On arrival at the hotel we are provided with a meal, but we will get there quite late as we will visit the ‘Blue Lagoon’ and the Gunnhiver Hot Springs en route.
  4. Travel Itinerary: Day of Return We will return on Wednesday 23rd July Flight: WOW Air flight X201 departing Keflavik at 06:45 (local time) and arriving at Gatwick at 10:55. Arrive at Oaklands at about 13:30 The school drive will be open If we are late returning I will put the ‘telephone tree’ into operation
  5. Baggage Allowances WOW Air bag dimensions Main bag/suitcase should be a standard sized suitcase with a 20KG limit Hand luggage, up to a maximum of 56x45x25cm including handles and wheels and no more than 10 kg into the cabin. In addition students can board with a duty free shopping bag. WOW Air baggage link click here
  6. Accommodation Arrangements Skálinn Centre or Húsið Guesthouse (owned by the same people, 400 yards apart). We are likely to be at the Skálinn Centre due to the size of our group, but we have stayed at both and know that both are more than suitable. There are excellent views of the coast and the Westmann Islands to the south and the majestic ice caps of Myrdalsjokull and Eyjafjallajokull are just to the east WE ARE FULL BOARD – BREAKFAST AND EVENING MEAL ARE PROVIDED, BUT STUDENTS WILL NEED TO MAKE SANDWICHES AFTER BREAKFAST TO TAKE OUT WITH US FOR LUNCH Husid Guesthouse 861 Hvolsvollur Iceland Telephone: 00354 487 8448/ 00354 845 3704
  7. Code of Conduct – Iceland 2014 Some of the key rules to obey during the trip are as follows: Instructions by Teachers / Course Leaders must be obeyed without delay at all times. SMOKING is not allowed ALCOHOL is not allowed to be consumed (good luck trying to buy it in Iceland anyway!!) PUNCTUALITY is essential. Know the time and place to meet for coach etc. Always stay on marked pathsand obey staff instructions about where you should be and things such as single file walking If you feel illreport to a member of staff. You are not allowed in any bedroom other than your own. Parents will be billed for payments arising from damage caused by the actions of their son / daughter.
  8. The Volcanic Hazard? A risk? For general information about Iceland trips at Rayburn Tours click here. During the 2010 eruptions there was actually a group staying with our host, and the accommodation is actually the local evacuation centre and he is in direct contact with the authorities. The hazard is not really lava and ash, but it is in fact flooding of the glacial ice on top of the volcanoes. There is a time delay from eruption to the flood, so there is likely to be ample warning time to respond. The authorities in Iceland are very well prepared for natural hazards – the Icelandic Met office website (click here) is an extremely good source of information

  10. Day 5 Where We Visit Day 4 Day 2 KEY Day 6 Day 3 Day 1 Gulfoss Geysir Airport KeridCrater Glacier Walk Vik Basalt Columns Blue Lagoon Waterfalls and Eyjafjallajokull Greenhouses at Hveragoi Day 3: Volcanic Eruption on Heimaey The Hotel & base for the trip
  11. Day 1: The Western Volcanic Zone
  12. Day Two: Geysers, Waterfalls and Volcanic Craters
  13. Day Two: Geysers, Waterfalls and Volcanic Craters Not a scheduled stop, but the bus driver stopped at the waterfall at Faxi- often referred to as ‘Iceland’s Niagara’.
  14. Day Two: Geysers, Waterfalls and Volcanic Craters The Strokkur Geyser at Geysir did not disappoint as it ‘erupted’ to a height of 15 metres every 5 minutes or so. There is a bigger geyser at Geysir, but it only erupts twice a day-hopefully we will be lucky next time we go!
  15. Day Two: Geysers, Waterfalls and Volcanic Craters The Gulfoss (Golden Waterfall) was the most powerful waterfall we visited. The total drop of 40 metres, along with the impressive gorge that has been produced was breath-taking. The river was flowing with such force as it was being fed by the summer melt of the glacier
  16. Day 3: Heimaey As part of our tour of the island we will be able to go on a boat trip around the island. We will also ascend the volcano that erupted in 1973
  17. Day 4: Waterfalls, Glaciers & Basalt Columns The 40 metreSeljalandfoss waterfall cascading over the former sea cliff.
  18. Day 4: Waterfalls, Glaciers & Basalt Columns Skagafoss is even bigger- 60 metres high! Once again, the waterfall cascades over a former sea cliff.
  19. Day 4: Waterfalls, Glaciers & Basalt Columns The Solheimajokull glacier was superb, but very dirty! Pictured here is the ‘snout’ of the glacier, but the students were given the opportunity to strap some crampons on and actually walk on the glacier on a fantastic guided tour
  20. Day 4: Waterfalls, Glaciers & Basalt Columns The basalt columns (just like the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland) near Vik.
  21. Day 5: Hekla & Landmannalaugar
  22. Day 6: Return home Our early morning flight time will prevent us from going to Reykjavik for a couple of hours. We should be back about 13:30
  23. Kit list and packing advice You should bring one bag to put in the hold and one bag to carry onto the plane. Possible kit list includes: NB: Packing: Please pack some food and your swimming kit on top of your luggage which will go in the hold. We go swimming in the Blue Lagoon Spa before we get to the hotel! Remember: Functional and comfortable… not fashionable! European plug adaptor!
  24. Pocket Money Perhaps convert between £50-£60 into Icelandic Krona? You may need to order this, but I had no problem getting it in M&S last year. However, there is little need for much money as food is provided.
  25. Final things..... Read through the travel insurance document carefully – contact me if you have any queries. If your child has a pre-existing medical condition you might be required to inform the insurance company Medical issues – speak to one of us before you leave(conditions we need to know about/ medication arrangements etc). Speak to me if you have any questions (if I don’t have the answer tonight I will get back to you). Passports and EHIC cards will be collected a week before we go.
