  1. DOOR-TO-DOOR SALES:What To Do&What Not To Do By: Priyanka Patel & Allison Ripa

  2. What are Door to Door Sales? • Defined, it is the selling of products from house to house by a salesperson. • Some are honest salesmen, but there are also ones that are not honest. • One should be aware of these scams, and follow guidelines to protect themselves.

  3. Before we begin… • A person should familiarize themselves with the characteristics of a true salesperson con artist. They are: • Male or female • Have charming and friendly appearance • Smile a lot & • Appear honest and genuine

  4. Firstly, Project Yourself! • They commonly use trick tactics to get into your home. Example: they are from a utility company or they are looking for a neighborhood address. • They usually ask for cash straight-up. • They will play on your sympathy. Example: They will tell you their family will go hungry if you do not buy the product they are selling to you.

  5. Safety Precautions • Firstly, do not let anyone you do not know into your house. • It’s perfectly fine and acceptable to close the door on them! ( A good way to do this is saying you have to check with your family first, before you buy their product.) • Ask for their identification card or permit to sell products door-to-door. • Lastly, you can also call to check the validity of the permit. • Take your time when making decisions. Do you REALLY want this item and do you REALLY trust this person?

  6. If You Decide To Buy! • Read ALL the terms of the contract. The contact should also be complete, signed and dated. • Don’t always trust exactly what they say. They, too, won’t always keep their promises! • Don’t sign a blank contact, like stated above, it should be 100% complete! • Make sure to ask for a number and the street address of the company, just in case you have to contact them.

  7. What if you change your mind? • You have 3 business days to cancel your order and receive a full refund. (It’s called a “cooling off” period.) • After you cancel, the seller has 10 days to get your money back to you.

  8. Take Action! • If you are having problems, there are a few agencies that can help you out. They are: • The Federal Trade Commission • The Local Consumer Protection Office
