  1. Importance of employee training and development

  2. The one aspect that often tells louder than fineness is development. Audiences undoubtedly love and appreciate an award-winning athlete, someone with natural talent and consistent, high-level performance—but think of how they react to the former bench staple who worked relentlessly to surpass the performance of the “naturals.” These players, the “underdogs,” get just as much, if not more, respect.

  3. In the same way, businesses should understand and support their employees’ incessant improvement and personal development. A large number of high-performing companies have introduced employee training and development programs in order to turn “underdogs” into ultimate leaders.

  4. What is employee development and training? • Employee development and training refers to the process of deliberately investing time, energy, and resources into the development of company personnel. Above all, employee training and development is more abou learning: software skills training, workflow modification, and even job shadowing are general examples of employee training and development.

  5. While the words training and development are often used exahngably, there are major differences between them that should influence the way company leaders think about performance improvement.

  6. Training refers to teaching an employee new skills to help them improve their job performance and work more efficiently. A few examples of employee training programs might include:  • Company-wide training on using new work management software  • Department training on how to use new machinery to increase productivity • Individual training on how to bill and invoice clients for a new hire

  7. Development, on the other side, refers to the development of existing skills. A few common ways companies invest in employee development might include:  • Presenting a workshop on interpersonal communication • Hiring a consultant to tackle weaknesses in workflow and inter-sector communication • Providing one-on-one mentorship for budding stars and future company leaders

  8. In the competitive era of modern business, young company leaders must always search for ways to lend an edge. Leadership, money investment, market share, and product and service offerings are certainly important, but employees are the substratum and the blood of any organization.

  9. Benefits of Employee Training and Development • Inviting and retaining talent • Employee training and development often leads to more satisfied team members, making it an intrinsic part of the talent management process. Studies reveal that when employees feel capitalized, are provided opportunities to enhance and advance, and feel valued for their unique contribution to a shared mission, they tend to stay with the company longer and even become internal advocates for the company mission.

  10. Growing profits • Under skilled employees cost businesses millions of dollars every year. Dismissals in team responsibilities, liabilities from employee faults, and unproductive workflows are the main capital drains of even the most positive companies. Employee training and development programs can help you grow the talent you already have to keep valuable company knowledge and tenure in house, decrease turnover, save on hiring costs, and exploit your profits.
