  1. Representation Study

  2. Red Hot Chili Peppers • In this image all of the band members are wearing American football helmets. • This represents hat they are a team. • It all signifies American, and that they are an American band. • Plain background, Puts for attention on the subjects. • The red, black and yellow helmets contrast with the plain background this draws the eye towards their faces, and highlights their serious facial expressions. • The serious expression on their faces is further highlighted by the use of eye contact. All the subjects are making eye contact with the camera. This direct address is what draw the audience to loo at the image, and then the linking article.

  3. Red Hot Chili Peppers • Again in the picture all of the subjects are, making eye contact, this draws the audiences eye, and also draws the attention to the subjects facial expressions. The fact that their facial expressions are serious also makes the audience tae them seriously. • This works with their clothing, the tie and jumper with hats and casual shirts gives a more school boy look, not something that is often related with serious topic. Their costume and facial expression works together to represent a young thug look. As is they are not to be messed with, and to be taken seriously. • Furthermore the plain background is blank, this gives the image an empty feel, with the lack of colour cohesion, also portrays a young thug look. Not a professional look, but never the less still serious. drawing the attention of the audience to the subjects.

  4. Green Day • This is a more naturalistic photo. • The subjects are not posing. • However they are standing next to a black and white background, and all of the subjects wearing black or grey suits. They skin is also quite pale. Although it is a naturalistic photo, there is a colour cohesion. • Here we can see that they are at the Grammy awards. The award is gold. This stands out from the colour cohesion we see in the photo, and represents success. • Furthermore, all the subjects are smiling. Suggesting that they are happy with their success.

  5. Green Day • This I a photo taken at a concert • Here we can see the lead singer(Billie Joe Armstrong) in the spot light, this represents that he is the main focus. • We can also see that he is higher up than his audience, this represents power, because they can all see him as he looks over them. • He also has his arm out, pointing into the air, possibly at the his audience, as if he is prompting them, to join in. This also represents power, as he is able to tell them what to do when to do it e.g. join in.

  6. Green Day • In the photo all of the subject are posing and looking at the camera, this suggests this was done at a photo shoot. • Furthermore, due to the fact that all the subjects are looking at the camera, signifies power, and can be seen as quite intimidating. This could saddest that there music is quite angry, or meaningful. • We can also see a colour cohesion, consisting of black, red and white. The colours are used on their clothing and the background. These colours are all often used to represent rock, and here we can see that they are representing that genre, telling us that they play music of that style.

  7. John Mayer • In the photo we can see that the subject is playing a guitar, and had spotlights beaming onto them. This suggests that the subject was on stage, possibly at a concert. Therefore that subject was not posing for the camera. • The subject looks to be concentrating, this suggests that he is playing in front of a crowd, this could represent fame and popularity. • There is some colour cohesion with the subject clothing (white, blue, and brown) and the yellow spotlight is beaming onto him, highlighting the difference in colours, this would have been done deliberately to make the subject standout to the audience.

  8. John Mayer • This photo was taken for an album cover. • The image is in black and white, and shows the subject holding their collar as if they’re straightening it. Therefore it appears to be a motion shot. Suggesting that the subject is on the move. • Due to the fact that the picture could have been taken whist the subject was moving, it could represent that the album that this picture is a cover for is just one aspect of the artist capability. • The subject is looking off from the camera, the could represent moving forward, aspiring to be great. • The subject is not showing any emotion, and is dressed in a smart jacket, this could represent the seriousness of the artist.

  9. John Mayer • This picture was used for album artwork. • So therefore the subject is posing. This is an action shot, whereby the subject has been captured whilst walking. • The colour cohesion used on the subjects clothing (various blues and whites, with a red scarf) matches that of their surroundings. The blues match the hill in the background and with the white it matches the sky. This would have been done deliberately. The red scarf stands out against the blues and whites. This could represent change, and that this album is done in a different genre, and also possibly that this artist is trying to stand out from the crowd, like the red scarf against the blue and white clothing. This could also been represented by the hat, which doesn’t match any of the back ground, but fits with the outfit, again representing difference in the genre however that it works, with the subject previous style of music. The subject is also looking away from the camera, across the field, and we can see that the wind is blowing due to the direction in which the clothes are swaying. This could represent moving away, as the subject is alone with field, and is in centre shot. This could signify again a change, in genre or style.

  10. Ben Howard • In the picture we can see that it was taken whilst the subject was performing. Therefore the subject was not posing for the camera. • The photo has captured the subject in focus with the spotlight pointing at the subject. The spotlight highlights the subjects face, and the concentration. This represents seriousness, and professionalism. • The spotlight implies that the subject is performing in front of an audience. This represents fame, and power. Additionally the use of the spotlight also represent importance, and the importance of this certain subject.

  11. Ben Howard • Here we see the subject posing against a wall with graphite on it. The represents an urban genre, however it can also represent youth, as graphite is often associated with youth, suggesting that the subject is young. This could represent that the subject is a new upcoming artist. • The subject is looking down the camera, engaging with the audience using direct address.
