  2. GOALS • Do BW4 to prepare for lesson • Annotate “Fast Break” • Complete TP-CASTT Analysis • Write “Passion Poem”

BW4 • First, list things that you are passionate about • Things that you enjoy and find pleasure in doing often • Examples: Soccer, piano, drawing, knitting, music, etc. • Circle one item from the list that you would like to write about • For your Bell Work, write about the item that you chose as if you are talking about it to your friend who has never experienced it before. Talk about all the different aspects and/or parts and why you are so passionate about it.

Annotate “Fast Break” • http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/179072 • Identify these poetic elements and their effects: Similes, metaphors, imagery, symbolism, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, personification, alliteration, allusions, characterization, dialogue, diction, form, irony, mood, oxymoron, paradox, parallelism, pun, refrain, repetition, rhyme, rhyme scheme, rhythm, suspense

Annotations from Class: • “A hook shot kisses the rim” • “gathering the orange leather” • “like a cherished possession” • Personification makes it seem like the ball is barely touching the rim • Imagery makes the ball physical for the reader • Simile shows us that to a basketball player, the ball is something valuable and precious

  6. Annotations from Class: • “like a coach’s drawing on the blackboard” • “the game he loved like a country” • “see an orange blur” • Simile helps the reader see the play just as the player sees it • Simile shows us that the player takes pride in the game just as men do for their country • Imagery shows us that the ball was moving fast or possibly that the player was dizzy from the fall

  7. Complete TP-CASTT Analysis • Click on “Fast Break” TP-CASTT attachment in teacher calendar to see what we came up with together in class.

  8. Write “Passion Poem” • Write a poem about something that you are passionate about, focusing on diction and imagery (like Edward Hirsch does for “Fast Break”). • It might help to go back and read what you wrote in BW4. • It might also help to visualize your self doing whatever it is that you are passionate about.
