  8. Part Two: The Purpose Driven Retirement

  9. The word “Retirement”is notin the Bible

  10. You need to transition

  11. Death Without Purpose! • A Shell Oil study of people who retire early vs. those who work. • “People who retire at 55 are 89% more likely to die in the 10 years after retirement than those who retire at 65.”

  12. Death Without Purpose! • “Without a purpose people tend to live shorter lives. This is simply because without purpose they will not have motivation to live. Sounds a bit morbid, but it’s true. When Dan Buettner discussed his research on centurions (those living to over the age of 100) as a TED presentation, he found that they were all able to tell him exactly what their purpose was.”

  13. Death Without Purpose! We need to make sure we are not retiring from our purpose for living.

  14. Science Catches Up to God • WSJ report – “Why You Need to Find a Mission- Having a purpose in life, new research shows, could be the key to a successful retirement.” (2013). • “Our study showed that having purpose in life is robustly protective. Those who reported having purpose in life showed a 30% slower rate of cognitive decline than those who did not.”

  15. Rick Warren on Retirement "The Bible says that as long as your heart is beating God has a plan and purpose for your life … to grow personally, to get to know God, to serve others, and make the world a better place," he told Forbes. "In retirement, what we have to ask is ‘What’s going to be the center of my life?’ because if you don’t have a solid center it’s going to fall apart.  Then we have to say, ‘Who are going to be my life companions; who will be my associates, my circle of influence; what is going to be the character of my life; how am I going to keep growing?'"

  16. You need to discover your purpose in life, prepare for your purpose, refine your purpose, live out your purpose, enjoy your purpose and redefine how you will live it out in “retirement.”

  17. You are still needed on this earth… that’s why you are still here.

  18. Part Three: A Person’s Work is Never Done

  19. Titus 3:1-10 gives direction on older men and women being used of God to care for the next generation.

  20. Titus 2:1-10 • Older men… • Gathered at the gate of the city to be available with their wisdom. • You are still needed in a culture where the male is all too often absent.

  21. Titus 2:1-10 • Older women… • A. Teaching younger women. Being mom and grandma and helping create and continue godly family life. • B. As the world becomes more mobile you are also needed where you are.

  22. Titus 2:1-10 • Young men and women… • A. Being the pattern for healthy living. • B. The life of integrity. • We will cover these in depth in the weeks ahead.
