Curriculum Architecture Conceptual Draft April 28, 2009
Design Principles • Modular and expandable • Comprised of “learning modules” that can be combined to create courses • Thematic coherence • Overarching themes motivate modular combinations • Improvable • Users can suggest links, examples, additional readings, etc. • Theoretical critiques can be added to build better theories
Constructing knowledge domains… • Process of curriculum development is modeled on “constructivist” theory of education • Users* develop modules, combine them into courses, and apply to novel settings • Knowledge is constructed along the way *Architecture does not distinguish creators from users (just like with open source software). Users can be “experts” and “students” at the same time.
Practices called “applications” • Software architecture typically has a kernel (central operations) and expandable modules (new applications) • Applications often called features… these are the new functionality of the system • Analogy: New practices that emerge from our school are “applications” of knowledge-base

Foundational Themes • Provide conceptual coherence to curriculum • Inspiration for new themes to emerge • Developed by CPW team • Learning modules • Training workshops • Education resources (tutorials, handbooks, interactive web portals, etc.)
Theme #1: Building Trust in Politics • Tools for Countering Deception • Includes: • Deconstruct spin • Myth busting • False memories • Accepting that you’ve been deceived (as empowerment process)
Theme #2: Cognitive Change Strategies • Language, Discourse, and Political Strategy • Includes: • Frames and metaphors • Strategic initiatives • Deep frames and moral systems • Values-based strategies
Theme #3: Managing Social Change • Psychology of Social/Political Change • Includes: • Stages of change process • Paradigms of social change • Healing a culture • Political change as social change
