  1. 5th Grade Friday Wrap upA recap of our week 11/15/13 Mrs. Faust, Mr. Cimino, Mrs. Thierjung, Mr. Fleming, & Mrs. Mowatt Writing We are just finishing up our first published piece in writing. Your students have been working hard through each stage of the writing process while writing their narrative. Help them to celebrate their success by reading their story or having them read it to you! (W.5.3A, W.5.5) Science We continued our Too Good for Drugs unit this week in science. We discussed making good decisions, peer pressure refusal strategies and offering better ideas when faced with peer pressure. The peer pressure refusal strategies can be found in your child’s workbook. At the end of this unit, students will be asked to write an essay about what they learned and perform a group skit acting out a refusal strategy. I hope this program is generating some good conversation with your kids at home. Continue to encourage them to get involved in class discussion. (SL.5.1C, SL.5.1D) Social Studies This week we started out reviewing the three Colonial regions, their specific geographic features, their economy, their government and their religion. Then students were broken up into problem solving work groups in preparation for their colony activity. Specific parameters were put in place at the end of the week so each member has a lead responsibility and an understanding of the expectations for the activity. Ask your son or daughter what colony they will be selling! Math This week we completed our work with Chapter 2! We are moving ahead with Fractions and Mixed Numbers Chapter 3. Students worked on activating their prior knowledge this week. (5.NF.1 & 5.NF.2) Please try to engage you children in math discussions about fractions and mixed numbers, take unusual opportunities to have them ‘thinking math’, for example; How can our family split a pizza? How can siblings share a candy bar? The more they are encouraged to ‘talk math’ the more they will own it! Important Upcoming Events • Tutoring for those who were invited will continue next week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Reminders *We can always be reached by email should you have any concerns or questions. • Conferences begin next week. We look forward to meeting you at your scheduled time. • American Education visits are next week!
