    2. Birth James Morris Lawson Jr. was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania.

    3. Growing Up Lawson grew up in Massillon, Ohio where he received his primary and secondary education.

    4. After high school He went to Baldwin-Wallace College in 1947. He became a member of the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR) and Congress of Racial Equality (CORE).

    5. Congress of Racial Equality Conducted sit ins in the late 1940s and embarked on a freedom ride more than a decade before the more famous ones of the early 1960s.

    6. A Conscientious Objector Is when a person claims the right to refuse to perform military service. 1951-He was sentenced to prison for three years for refusing.

    7. After Prison He earned his bachelors degree. After received bachelors degree, Lawson went to India to work the Methodist Board of Missionaries.

    8. Satayagrapha The strategy of non-violence that Mohandas Gandhi had developed.

    9. Return of the U.S. Entered Oberlins College Graduate School of Theology.

    10. Martin King Jr. One of Lawsons professors introduced him to King. King said to Lawson Come now. We dont have anyone like you down there.

    11. Down to Nashville James listened to King and enrolled at Divinity School of Vanderbilt University.

    12. Lawsons Workshops He began hosting training workshops teaching non-violence for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).

    13. Who he taught? In many of his workshops, Lawson taught many future leaders of the civil right movement. He taught James Bevel, Diane Nash, John Lewis, Bernard Lafayette, and Marion Barry.

    14. Nashville Sit ins 1959-1960 Lawsons students launched the sit ins. Lasted from February 13th to May 10th,1960.

    15. SNCC Lawson students along with activists from Atlanta, Georgia and other places in the south formed the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee-April 1960 .

    17. 1968 While involved in Sanitation Strike, Lawson invited Martin King Jr. to deliver his final speech. I've been to the Mountaintop.

    18. 1974 Moved to Los Angles, California. Became pastor of Holman United Methodist Church. Now retired.

    19. Jesus Each person in the Civil Rights Movement had a special relationship with God. James Lawson used Jesus response to conflict, non-violence.
