  1. This is a first, early draft at an attempt to present visually / geographically the events of 1 November 2007 in Perugia. Since the victim has no means to reply to any scenario presented herein, and the repeated use of her name in this context would only further hurt anyone close to her, I refer to her simply as “the victim”. This is not meant by any means to trivialise the pain and suffering, and butal senseless murder she experienced, nor to reduce her memory. As we become aware of more and more information concerning the Giallo di Perugia, - and, filtering out as best we can rumours and unfounded data – we see an ongoing cynicism amongst those who may have some sort of involvement with the crime. At times in this presentation, my own response to this affront to my/our intelligence is to employ cynicism in return. Any double-entendres, or visual twists in this document are not meant to obtain a laugh about a terrible set of crimes (including sexual assault, murder, desecration of a corpse, conspiracy to coverup a murder, possibly petty theft as well), but rather as a way of coping with the cynicism of those involved in each of those crimes or with knowledge about them. The situations reconstructed here are with ideas or event relationships which are not of my own. I have rather served as a graphic scribe of the excellent multi-point-of-view, multi-timezone, and multi-cultural discussion resulting from Steve Huff’s True Crime Weblog on this tragedy: http://www.truecrimeweblog.com/. I hope I haven’t abridged too much or left out key elements, in any case, there’s always time for a new release. That was Meryl Streep on the cover slide, in the movie “A French Lieutenant’s Woman”. In the book by John Fowles (better than the movie) there are 3 forks / endings to the story. In the Giallo di Perugia, as we go through the scenarios of what may have happened from an initial mid-October situation, I can only hope that there will be one single ending, that justice is served to those responsible for each of the crimes which may be determined by the ILE. I am buoyed by the fact that the victim’s family has expressed confidence in the Italian justice system. - Kermit email: krmt123@gmail.com

  2. Presentation and Navigation notes: • This presentation is set up in a fairly sequential manner: by simply hitting an arrow key, or PageDown, you advance through it. In this version DON’T CLICK to advance, unless you’re clicking on a hyperlink button. • You can navigate on certain pages by clicking on hyperlinks, which take you to a different place in the presentation. Normally, the new page will also contain a hyperlink to bring you back. • The two types of hyperlink buttons are: • References, like this If you click on them, they’ll take you to a time-line table on a page at the back of the presentation. The table contains a URL (normally to newspaper articles) as a documental reference for that point. From the table at the back, if you click on the orange buttons which are there beside each URL, you will return to the presentation pages where the initial reference was located. • Other navigation buttons, like this They are used for “other” documentation or for jumping around the presentation • Some of the transitions are a little dodgy. There are many versions of Powerpoint out there, so in order to make something which should work on most machines, I had to incorporate some fairly orthopedic mechanics. • Many of the references are the first ones I came across as I put this together. In many, or most cases, there are surely more solid and more detailed references. If you come across additional time-line points and / or better documental references (especially judicial documents, as the only one we have direct access to is the first one from Judge Claudia Matteini), post them on the blog, and we can update and improve this document. • Key to abbreviations: AK = Amanda Knox (red line), RS = Raffaele Sollecito (green line), PL = Patrick Lumumba (brown line), RHG = Rudy Guede (black line), SP = Sophie Purton (blue line). 1 Annex 1- Music events

  3. Two weeks to disaster If we don’t get into MySpace and Facebook emotional state analyses, or study the impact of AK’s parents’ divorce, RS’s mother passing away or RHG’s second generation immigrant issues (which should be looked at by those who know how – but which at the same time don’t set the three main suspects apart from many other members of society), we can probably set a count-down-to-murder date at a couple of weeks before 1 November, when RS and AK met at “a classical music music concert in the university”. Annex 1 shows that it’s hard to identify the specific musical event. This is one of those characteristics of this crime which strikes me: the extremely short period of time for the AK/RS relationship to develop, AK’s other contacts/relationships to develop (eg. with RHG), for her to alienate her housemates, for her to “move in” with RS, and get to the dangerous social cocktail of the murder evening, in addition to the impossibly incredible elements which have surfaced in different declarations, such as the victim cooking with RS and pricking her finger. 1 Annex 1- Music events October – November 2007 England-South Africa rugby match that RHG watched in pub, says he met victim. Low level of credibility. Eurochocolate festival in Perugia ends (just a cultual event – no direct relation to crime) More or less this is when RS and AK meet at a classical music concert 1 2 3 RS explains victim’s DNA on knife: they cooked together at his house. Had it happened, would’ve been around here. American would-be killer Kevin Wade arrested in Florida (name used by RHG in applying for asylum inGermany) RHG discovered by police with knife, sleeping in a kindergarten. 6 4 5 Amanda has period (RS’s boxer shorts, blood on bidet). No excuse to kill, but she could claim it’s a hormonal factor on top of her mental state. Halloween Parties. RHG with Spanish friends. Victim with English friends. AK with RS. DISASTER 8 7

  4. This is Perugia, looking from East-North-East to West-South-West. A wonderful ancient town which is hard to squeeze onto a computer screen, with any meaningful detail. Most of the events related to the final positioning of the characters of the Giallo di Perugia in the afternoon of Nov. 1, 2007 will be reconstructed on the canvas we see here, although at times we will pan to the left or to the right. Final Positioning (Nov. 1)

  5. TIME: 13:00 h. AK and victim are in their house together, she says they ate together. Final Positioning (Nov. 1) Perugia November 1, 2007 Girls’ house 1 RS is probably already there as well. It’s too cool to eat on the terrace/balcony, but from the kitchen window you still enjoy the view of the lush ravine below the house and the valley, hills and towns beyond. 1

  6. Panning to Left TIME: 15:30 h. Sophie Purton arrives at Robyn Butterworth's flat in via Bontempi 22. Final Positioning (Nov. 1) Final Positioning (Nov. 1) Final Positioning (Nov. 1) After a 100 meters or so you come to the Arco dei Gigli, rebuilt in the Middle Ages on earlier Etruscan foundations. Onward to the next covered passage, the tower house at Via Bontempi 28 which belonged to the Canons of San Lorenzo, and has a relief of the martyrdom of St Laurence on its loggia.  A similar relief appears on the lintel over the door to number 22, Robyn’s place, where Sophie’s walk ends. SP RB Via Roscetto for me marks the transition from the quaint medieval town above to less attractive areas below (to the east and north). (There are still plenty of historical sites and monuments around here). 1 1 2 Sophie lived in (or around) via Roscetto, on the east side of the hill which dominates old Perugia. In the case of the girls in the house in Via della Pergola, this hill makes the as-the-bird-flies route from their house to uptown quite a climb. Via Bontempi 2 1 1 Via Roscetto

  8. TIME: 16:00 h. Victim arrives at Robyn Butterworth's flat after a 10 minute walk, for a get-together of English friends. Being a national holiday, and Perugia a university town, most Italian friends would be back in their home-towns with family. Final Positioning (Nov. 1) SP RB 3 ... and from the gate in the street (barely visible here) look both ways for traffic (sidewalks are scarce in an ancient town adapted to modern vehicles), and up the hill to Piazza Grimana. The victim could have gone the long, slightly flatter route by Sophie’s flat, but in that case Sophie would have waited for her … so let’s have her walk up the more scenic and animated route through downtown, first to Piazza Grimana. Everywhere in Perugia is uphill from the girls’ house, right from the door to their house. First of all is the ramp from their parking area to the street above ... 2 3 1

Being a national holiday, and Perugia a university town, most Italian friends would be back in their home-towns with family. Final Positioning (Nov. 1) Let’s go through the Arch and straight up Via Ulisse Rocchi. There are two other possible routes off to the left, up the similarly steep Via Bartolo, or the even steeper stone stairs of Via del Prome. In this snap you can actually see someone shooting baskets in Piazza Grimana SP RB 3 The victim could have gone the long, slightly flatter route by Sophie’s flat, but in that case Sophie would have waited for her … so let’s have her walk up the more scenic and animated route through downtown, first to Piazza Grimana. 13. TIME: until about 17:00 h. RS and AK are at the girls' house. They smoke "one" joint. This is from RS's initial declaration to investigating Judge Matteini. I have assigned the cut-off time, in order to fit in with the next events. Final Positioning (Nov. 1) It may have been one or several, but I think that not since the movie “Reefer Madness” has marijuana been blamed for such violence and permanent memory loss immediately following use by young persons. Sorry to quote Wikipedia: “Reefer Madness is a 1936 propaganda film revolving around the tragic events that follow when high school students are lured by pushers to try ‘marihuana’: a hit and run accident, manslaughter, suicide, rape, and descent into madness all ensue .... The film was intended to be shown to parents as a morality tale attempting to teach them about the dangers of cannabis use .... The film never gained an audience until it was rediscovered in the 1970s and gained new life as a piece of uninten- SP tional comedy among cannabis smokers. Today, it is in the public domain in the United States and is considered a cult film. It inspired a musical satire, which premiered off-broadway in 2001, and a Showtime film, Reefer Madness, based on the RB musical. ‘Reefer Madness’ is the best example of propaganda that was used to give false information to the public on the effects of marijuana.” I’m sure hash or marijuana use contributed to the Giallo de Perugia, but either other, harder drugs – like crack – and/or other elements like criminal intent and conspiratorial coordination are bigger issues that need to be examined. 4 2 3 1 4

  14. TIME: 17:00 h. AK and RS leave the girls’ house. Final Positioning (Nov. 1) SP RB 5 In AK's first declaration to police, she said she and RS left at 17:00 h, going to RS's place, where they spent the rest of the night together. For the sake of argument, let's accept her departure time, but reject her affirming where they went (going to his place and not leaving until the next morning), given other data we’ll see further along. 2 3 5 1 4

  15. TIME: 17:00 h. – 17:45 h. Scenic tour stated by RS, as they wander around downtown before going to his place (contrasts with AK saying they went directly to his place – also time difference). If anyone has a problem with the wandering around, just have AK and RS go directly to his place, it's not key for the moment (unless, for example, if it turns out they were going downtown to buy certain drugs). Final Positioning (Nov. 1) SP RB 6 The Domus discotheque, where a wide range of clients show up – including suspected murderers dancing off the buzz of killing - is just off Piazza Morlacchi. In RS's modified declaration to investigators, he said that at 18:00, he and AK leave the girls' house and go downtown, passing through Piazza Grimana, Piazza Morlacchi, the main fountain and Corso Vannucci. Let's say for the purpose of this timeline that the time difference concerning their departure from the house compared to AK (who said 17h.) is due to drug confusion. 16. Panning to Left TIME: 17:00 h. – 17:45 h. (continued) Scenic tour stated by RS, as they wander around downtown. Final Positioning (Nov. 1) Final Positioning (Nov. 1) I don’t know if the Domus was already open at that time – I don’t think there is any other reason they would have gone to Piazza Morlacchi. Maybe RHG or friends had a sales point there. entrance to Domus ==> 2 2 SP SP 3 3 RB RB 6 6 5 5 1 1 4 4 6 According to RS they went on to the fountain. And down the Corso Vannucci before turning around.

  17. Return from Left to Centre TIME: 17:00 h. – 17:45 h. (continued) Scenic tour stated by RS, as they wander around downtown. Final Positioning (Nov. 1) 2 2 SP SP 3 3 RB RB 6 6 5 5 1 1 4 4 6 They head for RS’s place. There may be a reason for them to pass through Piazza Grimana again, but for the moment we don’t have any further route information. Therefore, I’ll end their scenic route with my own scenic ending: that they follow Via dell’Acquedutto, an official pedestrian city street which utilises the old Roman aquaduct. It’s a panoramic short-cut. (It goes behind the University for Foreigners, the building in the upper-right in the first photo.) Aquaduct Street turns into Via del Fagiano in the last, uphill stretch. One last look back before arriving at RS’s.

  18. TIME: 17:45 h. Polish student sees AK and RS in the vicinity of RS's house. This is the first of two sightings by the Polish student of AK that evening (only one of RS). Final Positioning (Nov. 1) Pol SP RB 7 7 Question no. 1 for Polish student: Which RS did you see? Question no. 2 for Polish student: Which AK did you see? 2 3 6 5 There’s no joking. I think the Polish student has some key testimony, about this sighting, and about the later encounter with AK. 1 4

  19. TIME: 18:00 h. Victim, Sophie Purton and Robyn Butterworth have pizza, ice cream and coffee at Robyn's flat. Water, no alcohol. Later toxicology tests prove that the victim only had traces of caffeine in her blood, no alcohol or drugs. Final Positioning (Nov. 1) Pol SP RB 8 7 I found three flats for rent for Foreigners’ University students in Via Bontempi 22. Below, a single room. Above right, 3 bedroom flat, and below right another 3 bedroom flat free from December 7. I believe that Robyn shared housing with some of the other four girls who will return to Perugia with her and Sophie. Maybe one of the two flats on the right is where they had their get-together. It’s spartan student housing, but warmed by the friendship and pizza. 2 3 8 6 5 1 4

  20. TIME: 18:40 h. The three English girls watch a movie until about 21:00 h. The DVD was "The Notebook" (123 minutes) Final Positioning (Nov. 1) Pol SP RB 9 7 2 3 8 6 9 5 1 4

  22. TIME: 20:30 h. I think there’s scheming going on at RS’s place: RS says in initial declaration to Judge Matteini that between 20:30 and 21:00 h he and AK returned from downtown to his place. MAYBE: in addition to lying about being together all evening, they did return together to his place, but earlier, and arranged the evening from there. This is what Judge Matteini suggests in her initial report. Afterwards, AK may have gone on to Piazza Grimana alone or accompanied by RS. In the former case (AK leaves RS at home alone), maybe it was AK - not RS - who after just two weeks of relationship was "bored with the same old evenings“ ... Final Positioning (Nov. 1) Pol SP RB 11 11 7 10 2 3 8 6 9 5 1 4

  23. TIME: 20:30 h. To the soundtrack of “Jaws”, RHG surfaces in the area of the cottage, although declaring a FALSE trail, that he arrived at the girls’ house as prearranged with the victim. FALSE trail!! RHG says he arrives on time for his date at via della Pergola 7, and victim arrives 10 minutes later. He declares they go inside and hug (did he bring her a bouquet of flowers?). However, in reality she is still at Robyn’s flat. Since he is the only suspect who consistently has admitted being on the scene of the crime (AK sometimes is, sometimes isn't), we can assume he was in the vicinity from 20:30 onwards. Therefore, lets leave him shooting baskets in Piazza Grimana. Final Positioning (Nov. 1) Pol SP RB 12 11 7 10 Informal basketball games for foreigners in Piazza Grimana. 2 3 12 8 6 9 5 1 4

  25. TIME: 20:36 h. (estimated) According to AK's "confession", she left RS in his house, going to Piazza Grimana, where she declared she met PL (and / or RHG??? RHG by his own admission was in the vicinity at this time, and by his own admission was in the house when the murder took place). Final Positioning (Nov. 1) Pol SP RB 14 11 7 13 14 This is perhaps the KEY POINT, especially for RS. Did he stay at home (only getting involved in the cover-up? In that case, it remains to be analysed to what degree he was involved in the coverup, and in particular WHY he initially partook in the cover-up, and WHY he continues to partake in it, if teenage love and infatuation – although he was 24 – explains his initial participation in the cover-up. Maybe there are other elements of family/social pride or shame involved like the use of heavier drugs – crack more easily explains the sadistic violence than hash / marijuana – or maybe if she wore his underwear, he wore hers … that sort of stupid thing for which he prefers to be in prison). Or did he go with AK to the girls’ house, and join the murder “party” during the course of the evening? 10 2 3 12 8 6 9 5 1 4

  26. TIME: 20:38 h. PL's cell phone signal captured in area of girls' cottage. No one believes PL was involved in the crime. However he may have useful information about AK’s plans for the evening (eg. “Come on over to smoke / to snort / to have an orgy”). Did he go to Piazza Grimana, returning to the pub by 21h? Final Positioning (Nov. 1) Pol SP RB 15 11 7 13 14 10 15 2 3 12 8 6 9 5 1 4

Final Positioning (Nov. 1) Pol SP RB 18 11 I have a problem here: press reports refer to CCTV images of AK wearing a "light coloured skirt“. But why does RS refer to her in the morning as not wearing jeans – which you understand she was wearing the night before - but rather a dress? 7 13 14 16 17 10 15 2 3 12 18 8 6 9 5 1 4 Would the real CCTV images please stand up?

It probably doesn’t change much, but by accompanying Sophie, the victim follows the route around the bottom of the hill, rather than going over the top and down the slope. Either RS shows up later after the sexual assault and murder of the victim, or he doesn’t appear on scene until the next morning. 2) AK, RHG and RS in house at time of murder. 3) RHG in house at time of assault and murder (which would coincide with the victim arriving at her house). AK in the vicinity, shows up to to encounter RHG in a mess. 23 24

  45. Here are a number of classical music events in Perugia in October 2007. RS was quoted as saying it was at “the university”. I couldn’t find one in either university around the 19th or 20th (these ones are either in churches or municipal auditoriums). However, being a university town, it would not be surprising to find mid-month classical music concerts on university premises. Or, RS was misstated, and he and AK met at one of the events below, or similar ones: Sabato 6 ottobre alle 21 toccherà a Rosalba Petranizzi, mezzosoprano e Virgilio Bianconi basso-baritono che ci proporranno una raccolta di brani mariani del XVII e XVIII secolo accompagnati ed intercalati dalle abili interpretazioni di brani strumentali del maestro Eugenio Becchetti che è anche direttore artistico del festival. 13 OTTOBRE ore 21 – CASTEL DEL PIANO – SALONE FILARMONICA presso il salone parrocchiale di Castel del ianoConcerto per clarinetto e pianoforteCHIARA PAROLO RENATA BENVEGNU’ 20 OTTOBRE ore 21 - MIGLIANO – CHIESA PARROCCHIALE Concerto per quartetto di clarinettiANDREA CAMPORESESAURO ALICANTIANDREA VEREMONDIGUIDO ARBONELLI 20 OTTOBREPalazzo dei Priori, Sala dei Notari, ore 21,00 PERUGIA INCONTRA...
