  1. The Origins of the Phrase "Spring Cleaning"

  2. You might have heard people having a talk about “Spring Cleaning”. The term is in fact, used for ‘a large, clean out’ and have nothing to do with the spring season.

  3. How did Spring Cleaning come about? The house usually gets dirty, smelly, and filthy during the winter season. To get rid of this problem people has a large, clean out during spring season termed as ‘Spring Cleaning'. The term originated during the 1850s from several cultural traditions around the world.

  4. A Jewish tradition? With the onset of spring, Jewish people clean their homes to remove any bread morsel. They consider leaving bread crumbs during this time an insult to God.

  5. An Iranian tradition? The practice of Spring Cleaning dates back to the Persian new year. They continue the practice of khooneh takouni, or ‘shaking the house’ and thoroughly clean the house from the drapes to the furniture.

  6. A Chinese tradition? We all know that Chinese people are quite superstitious. Before the coming of Chinese New Year, the house is thoroughly cleaned to keep bad luck away from the home and family.
