  1. Scientific Inquiry

  2. What is scientific Inquiry • It is the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on the evidence they gather.

  3. 1. Posing Questions • A scientific question can be answered by making observations and gathering evidence. • NOT opinion-based.

  4. 2. Developing a Hypothesis • Hypothesis = a possible explanation for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question. • Must be TESTABLE • “If-then” • Not a fact.

  5. 3. Designing an Experiment • Control variables • Variable = a factor that can change in an experiment • Manipulated variable = the variable that is purposely changed to test a hypothesis • Responding variable = the factor that changes in response to the manipulated variable • Constants = variables that do not change

  6. Designing an experiment, cont’d • Controlled experiment • Make sure ONLY ONE variable is manipulated at a time. • Why is this important??????? • Form Operational definitions • OD = a statement that describes how to measure or define a particular variable or define a particular term.
