  4. Common Misconceptions • Africa is all unpaved, rural villages • It’s always hot in Africa • Africa is dangerous and violent

  5. Regional Africa • Hugely diversified • Population in the US: 35,000 in 1960; 1m+ in 2002. • Similarities based on regional groupings • West Africans- 40% of all African immigrants. • East Africans • Central Africans • Southern Africans

  6. Why Emigrate to the US? • The American dream • Political persecution • Social crisis – civil war ( Liberia, Somalia)

  7. Diversity Issues • Acculturation- adaptation, behavioral shifts; acculturative stress, cultural assimilation.. • Discipline & child upbringing • Religion • Family dynamics – coping and adaptation; family conflicts
