Good News About John Glenn… • Student achievement in math, reading, and science is increasing overall! • Teachers offer additional help to students before, during, and after school. • EVERY student in need of additional academic and/or behavioral support gets it through our Academic Support Liaison, Behavior Support Liaisons, and General Education Casemanager. • We have advanced and enriched classes for students in need of challenge. • We have TONS of after school opportunities! • Student of the Month

  5. Details… • 7:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. school day • 6 classes per day • 4 minutes passing time • 60 licensed staff • 40 support staff • 750 students • Activity buses run everyday except Wednesdays.

Save the Dates… • Fifth Grade Parent Information Meeting • Tuesday, April 30th • 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. • Meet 6th Grade Teachers • Overview of 6thgrade • 6th Grade Transition Morning • Wednesday, August 28th, from 8:00-12:00 • For 6th graders ONLY! • Buses will run this morning • Back to School Night • Wednesday, August 28th, from 3:00-7:00 p.m. • Purchase P.E. uniforms • Put money in lunch accounts • School Pictures are taken • Students pick up schedules • Fill out and turn in emergency cards • Students get lockers • Students bring school supplies

JG Student Achievement Goals… • Long Term Goals: • 90% proficiency in Reading and Math by 2015 • 75% proficiency in Science by 2015 • Achievement gaps will decrease to 10% by 2015 • 100% of students On-Track to Graduate by 2015 • Short Team Goals for 2012-13 • 68% proficiency in Reading • 63% proficiency in Math • 45% proficiency in Science • 80% of students On-Track to Graduate

Academics… • Students have 6 classes a day. • Integrated Language Arts / Social Studies (2 class block) – regular & enriched • Math– regular & advanced (intervention class available) • Science/Health – 2 trimesters of science, 1 trimester of health • PE & Music (Choir or Band) – every other day classes • Art/Industrial Technology/Family & Consumer Sciences– one trimester of each class • Students in need of math intervention will likely miss the art/IT/FACS rotation (or part of it).

P.E. and Band… • Students will change in the locker rooms. • Students need a pair of shorts and a John Glenn P.E. shirt. • Shorts and shirts can be purchased during Open House in the fall. • Students will have swimming during all three years at John Glenn. • Band instruments can be purchased or rented. • If your child wants to play in the band and rental is not an option for you, we have some school instruments. P.E. Band

  12. Connections… • Reading Workshop and Writing Workshop structures are used in the middle school too. Elementary has been using these structures for many years. • Developmental Designs is used in middle school to build a positive learning-focused community of respect. Elementary schools use Responsive Classroom. DD is the middle school version of RC. • The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program is being implemented at John Glenn too!

Details About Athletics… • Athletes must have a current SPORTS physical on file in the nurse’s office. • Practices are after school until 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, & Fridays. • Games are typically done by 5:30-6:00. • Transportation must be arranged by parents/guardians. • Athletic fees or a payment plan must be set up with the Athletic Director, Denver Moeller, prior to competition.

TOPS Classes…(Targeted Opportunities for Personal Success) • After school from 2:20-3:45 • Activity buses run at 3:50 • Three sessions – one per trimester • Classes: • Chess Club Swimming • Kayaking Club Knitting • Scratch – Computer Class Study Skills • Cooking & Baking Classes Drama Club • Knowledge Bowl Math League • Hmong Club Guys’ Group • Girls’ With a Voice GEMS – Girls’ Group • Timez Attack Art Club • World Language Classes YMCA TOPS Club

Breakfast & Lunch… • Breakfast served from 7:25-7:40 a.m. • Lunches by grade level – 10:00, 11:00, 12:00 • Students with early or late lunch will have a snack during the day. • Lunch Options: • Bring your own bag lunch. • Regular Hot Lunch • Alternative Line – pizza, hamburgers, subs • Salad Bar • A La Carte

  17. Immunizations & Medications… • Registered Nurse – Deb Givot • All medications need doctor’s orders to be given at school. • No new immunizations needed for 6th grade. • 7th graders must have additional immunizations to attend school in the fall of their 7th grade year. • Documents all visits to the nurse’s office. • Organizes all student care plans – asthma, diabetes, allergies, etc.

Dress Code… The following clothing items are NOT considered appropriate for school… • T-shirts or other garments with profanity, inappropriate language, suggestive messages, or tobacco/drugs/ alcohol product advertising • Clothing with large tears or that is see-through • Midriffs, halter tops, tank tops, spaghetti strap shirts • Leggings without a shirt, skirt, or shorts covering the backside • Short shorts, short skirts or low riding pants • Hats/caps/headwear/hoods/bandanas/do-rags • Bags, purses, and/or coats may not be worn and/or carried during school hours • All gang related clothing or insignias i.e. bandanas, hats, picks, combs and jewelry • Excessive use of perfume, cologne and hair spray will not be permitted

How Can You Support Your Child at Home? • Help your child work independently at home by planning a daily routine with a regular time for homework. • Be sure your child reads at least 30 minutes nightly • Check Parent Portal for information on your child’s class progress and work • Be sure your child attends school every day and eats breakfast every morning • Call us with any questions or concerns
