  4. Manual Handling • The laws that apply to this subject: • 1. Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 • 2. Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999. • 3. Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992. • 4. LOLER regulations 1998

  5. Why is this important? • In year 2000 : 50% of U.K. population reported low back pain 24+ hours at some time during the year. • IN 1990 results were only 33% • 80% of people get 24hr+ LBP

  6. How long does it last? • half had LB pain lasting longer than 4 wks • 8 million affected • Older people long term chronic • Leading uk disability (1.1m)

  7. Employer’s Duties • Avoid any hazardous manual handling (where possible) • Assess the risk • Minimise the risk as far as is reasonably practicable

  8. Employees Duties • Follow safe systems of work • Make full and proper use of equipment provided • Follow guidance given in training • Co-operate with management • Report ALL problems promptly
