  1. Methods For Building A Respectful Relationship Between Caregiver And Care Recipient

  2. Communication • Steve usually knows what his father wants or needs instinctively. Bill and Angelica got off to a rocky start. Bill forgot that unlike his son Angelica had not known him his entire life. When Bill began communicating his wants and needs to Angelica their relationship improved and Angelica was able to render more effective care. If Steve or Angelica are unclear about Bill's wants or needs they ask him for clarification.

  3. Honesty About Symptoms • As new symptoms of his condition presented Bill remained silent about them. His silence placed his caregivers at a disadvantage and made them feel disrespected. The change in his condition changed what Bill needed from Steve and Angelica. Upon becoming aware of the new symptoms his caregivers modified Bill's care plan to address his new needs. Steve was able to prepare the family emotionally and financially for the changes in his father's condition.

  4. Patience And Understanding • Pain and fear sometimes make Bill difficult to deal with. Bill reminds himself that Steve and Angelica are working for his benefit and that because of them he can stay at home. When Bill is being difficult Steve and Angelica remind themselves of the cause of Bill's negative behavior. They also think about how they might behave if the situation was reversed.

  5. Delegation of Duties • Bill is not always comfortable with Angelica helping him in the bathroom. Bill often finds his son's driving style unnerving. To address these issues Steve and Angelica have coordinated their schedules so Angelica drives Bill to appointments and Steve helps his father with bathing and going to the toilet.

  6. Encouragement And Emotional Support • His dependence on others makes Bill feel that he is losing his dignity. The perceived loss of dignity hurts his self-esteem. As a professional caregiver, Angelica has seen the good that emotional support and a little cheerleading can do. She passed this experience on to Steve. Through the emotional support and encouragement of his caregivers, Bill's self-image has improved. As an added benefit Bill shares a more respectful and affectionate relationship with Steve and Angelica. If you are looking for an expert caregiver, you can opt for home care Falmouth.

  7. Listen To Your Loved Ones

  8. Sharing Pastimes With Your Loved Ones • Bill loves puzzles. During their time with him, Steve and Angelica set aside time to sit with Bill while he does the puzzles in the newspaper. Doing something they love gives a care recipient mental stimulation, boosts their morale, and creates a chance for positive interaction with their caregiver.
