  4. Objectives

  5. Objectives • Enhance and further develop professional skills • Learn how to approach a case • Learn how to present a case • Build confidence!

  6. Approaching the Case

  7. Business Cases: Background • Real world examples with unique problems • Can range from ½ page to 20+ pages • Types • Single Discipline / Multi-Disciplinary • Technical / Conceptual • Focus on integration and application of knowledge

  8. The Case “Mindset” • Who are you? Who is your team? Who are the judges? • No one right approach • Adapt to what is given (remain confident) • Apply your knowledge

  9. Approaching the Case

  10. Presenting the Case

  11. Presenting with Confidence • Present as though your team has discussed every option possible and this is the best one • Speak slowly and clearly • Have a balanced team

  12. Crafting Professional Presentations • Keep font sizes, colors, and styles consistent • Use (but don’t overuse) graphs, charts, and tables • Don’t use too much text because the judges will just read the slides and not pay attention to what you have to say • Use roadmaps and transitions • Balance content and delivery

  13. Question and Answer • “Our team discussed this issue…” • Quote facts from the case and adapt your plan • Maintain team balance • Discuss a Q&A technique before entering the room • Point Person • Non-verbal cues

  14. Tips and Tricks

  15. Do: Use Timelines • Highlights implications • Where you are • Deadlines/urgency • Time constraints • Note: Sometimes judges are “from the future.” Adapt accordingly.

  16. Do: Make Assumptions • Your data will rely on assumptions • Have a defense of your assumptions (just in case) • Be aggressive in reading into the case

  17. Do: Be a Team Player • A team dominated by one or two members will not be successful • This means: • Speak up (if you are quiet) • Let others speak (if you are loud)

  18. Don’t: Read From the Slides or Memorize • You will have enough time to practice, so use it! • Practice makes perfect, but… • Trying to memorize a speech will not work

  19. Don’t: Be Afraid to Have a “Lead” Presenter • A polished presentation has an introduction and a conclusion • Consider having the same person “open” and “close” the presentation
