THE NAWAL NGO FOUNDATION RAJASTHAN PROJECT 2012
Introduction On our research for the project we went to see several villages starting with Balesar which had a Tube well sunk by Mr. Julian Millane of Shikara Design Byron Bay, Australia, It has been installed for 18 months now and is working extremely well and has made a huge difference to the women and children’s lives who had to previously walk and carry water for 4/5 Kilometers there and back for their daily requirements. Sometimes they had to purchase water by tankers which could be either sweet or brackish which would cost the villagers 500 rupees per tanker which had to be distributed between the village people. Now, with the kindness of Mr. Millane Mr. Jabar Singh head man of the village reports that it has made a huge difference to lives of 100/150 people and the livestock consequently they are much healthier due to the sweet water. We met the people of the village and without exception all say a huge thank you to Mr. Millane.
Billa Ki Dhani We visited various other villages among which were a small one named Billa ki dhani where the villagers requested electricity to be connected due to the fact that all their lighting were kerosene lamps which consisted of a small bottle with kerosene and a wick which they lighted It was extremely dangerous due to the fact that their houses were made of wood and the roofs were grass thatched. The connection will not cost too much as the next village which has electric can be used for the connection. The government had sunk a well but didn’t go down far enough and the water dried out and all the pipes etc have rusted. They asked for a well with a hand pump which will be a little less expensive that an electric pump. As do the other villagers the women and children have to walk the usual four to five kilometres for their daily requirements

Temri Village • The people of Temri Village also need a well with an electric motor. They have to collect water by camel cart with a tank on it but it is expensive and sometime it is not available or brackish hence lots of health problems. As with the other villages sometimes the women and children have to walk four kilometers and back carrying their daily consumption of water which again may be brackish. The men are willing to do the labor on a voluntary basis as a trough is needed for the livestock. We may have to dig down to 500 feet for the sweet water.
Birai Village The men of the village are willing to do the building voluntarily keeping the cost down a little. They have no electric for the pump but there is a power line nearby which can be connected to the school at little cost. The head teacher Mr. Baksaram is very eager to help his pupils by getting a well installed. There is water but might be 450/500 feet down. There is a head master and three teachers indeed one of the teachers travels by bus from Jodhpur every day which is one hour each way. It is a government school and they have paid for the land but private donors paid for the building work which was opened seven years ago. We are planning to bring volunteers to help teach in this school also. They have been supplied with books, pencils, rubbers and coloring pencils also.
The Government School There is a small school near Birai which has approximately 25 pupils which are very poor. We are planning to bring volunteers out from the UK to help teach the children English and games. Mr. Hanuman and his co-teacher who are very dedicated men and they want to help there pupils. We have started by supplying the pupils with uniforms, school books, pencils and school bags. By the time the school terms starts in July they will have volunteers to help them.
Village of Derea The village of Derea in the desert also needs a well with an electric pump. It is near Temri etc and the same applies to them. They have to either carry their water many miles or pay for a tanker of water twice a week which they can ill afford. The tankers are sometimes never delivered and is never guaranteed to be sweet indeed very often it is brackish and causes much health problems. Most of the villages are close together hence we can save on drilling costs if we are able to have them all done simultaneously.
