Baseballs and Baseball Bats • When a baseball bat is thrown, it wobbles and does not flow smoothly through the air. • It wobbles about a special point • It is the sum of two motions: • A spin around this point • And a movement through the air as if all the weight were concentrated at this point. • AKA the center of gravity.
Center of Gravity • The point located at the objects average position of weight. • Symmetrical object • Center • Irregularly shaped object • Center of gravity is toward the heavy end • Objects not made of the same material throughout, have a center of gravity far from the geometric center.
Center of Gravity • When an irregular shaped object is thrown: • it usually rotates around the center of gravity • as well as following a straight line motion with the center of gravity. • No matter where in the air the object is tosses, the center of gravity will always follow a smooth parabola.
