  2. Mid-term Review

  3. An economic system where the means of production are owned by the worker. • Totalitarianism • Communism • Fascism • Democracy By ‘Means of production’ we mean to say the things the worker uses to make the product. This includes the factory and has a emphasis on worker’s rights

  4. This system typically has one leader with unquestioned power. • Democracy • Totalitarianism • Communism • Fascism Fascism and, most of the time, Communism are forms of Totalitarianism

  6. Why was Italy so mad about the Treaty of Versailles? • They had to give up conquered land. • The treaty ignored their part in WWI • The treaty did not punish Germany enough • The Weimar Republic was weak. Remember, Italy was on the ‘winning’ side of WWI and felt they deserved more from the treaty.

  7. What was NOT something Germany had to do according to the Treaty of Versailles? • Demilitarize • Hold Democratic elections • Give up conquered land • Take full responsibility for the war

  8. This is a system of gov’t that stresses the glory of the state. • Fascism • Communism • Democracy • Monarchy Mussolini said “Everything in the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state”

  9. Early in WWII, Hitler shocked Europe when he invented a reason to attack… • Belgium • Turkey • Russia • Poland

  10. Early in WWII Hitler signed a non-aggression pact with… • Italy • Russia • England • Japan

  11. What was NOT true about the non-aggression pact? • Stalin signed it. • Stalin was promised land won in war • Germany agreed never to attack Russia • Hitler kept all the promises made in the pact

  12. The Axis Powers included all BUT… • Russia • Italy • Germany • Japan

  13. Why were policies like Cash-and-Carry created? • So the US could aid Hitler and still remain neutral • So the US could aid Hitler’s enemies and still remain neutral • To help FDR get re-elected • To help Hitler find favor with the German people b/f WWII See also Lend-Lease Act

  14. What is NOT a difference btw ‘Stalinism’ and pure Communism? • Stalin envisioned a classless society and pure Communism does not. • Stalin created a classless society; everyone below him. • Stalin owned and controlled all aspects of production and society • Stalin gave property, taken from the poor, to the rich

  15. The first major US operation in WWII was in… • North Africa • Europe • Asia • Italy

  16. Which of the following was NOT part of Hitler’s ‘final solution’? • Destruction of work camps to create death camps • Construction of death camps • Eradication of all Jews in Europe • Speed the genocide of European Jews Death camps were created but work camps weren’t destroyed.

  19. This was a policy to fight war by fighting poverty and poor economies all over the world. • Truman Doctrine • Eisenhower Doctrine • Iron Curtain Speech • Marshall Plan

  20. Why did Soviets place a blockade on West Berlin? • In response to a democratic gov’t there • B/C Germans in West Berlin were rebelling • B/C Germans in East Germany were rebelling • Stalin didn’t do this…the English did! Stalin was uncomfortable with the ‘western’ influence.

  21. What was the US and British response to the blockade in the last question? • Declaration of War • Airlift supplies to West Berlin • Give their sectors of W. Berlin to the French who had a plan… • Allow W. Berlin to become part of the USSR

  23. Before the Korean War the Korean Peninsula was divided into two sectors… • N. Korea occupied by USSR • S. Korea occupied by France • S. Korea occupied by the USSR • N. Korea was occupied by US Remember that it made sense to divide the peninsula the way it was b/c N. Korea bordered communist China and was very close to the Soviet Union

  24. Why was Korea divided after WWII? • It had been under Japanese control. • The Koreans were being punished for their role in WWII • It was part of the Eisenhower Doctrine • Stalin attacked the Peninsula Japan found itself on the ‘losing’ side of the war. This was part of surrender, (to give up Korea that is).

  25. Which is NOT true about the Korean War? • US declared war on N. Korea after its invasion of S. Korea • War was never officially declared by the US; it was a police action. • The 38th Parallel was the border btw the Koreas • Nothing was gained or lost when the war was over

  26. What was the domino theory? • If Communism is not contained the world will fall to it • The ‘West’ should contain Communism • It is not the job of the US to destroy Communism • If you line up little blocks one in front of the other and flick the first one they all fall over.

  27. What happened in Panmunjom? • A major battle • The N. Koreans surrendered • Fighting stopped for peace agreements • Talks of peace went on and so did the fighting Panmunjom was a city north of the 38th Parallel. This is where the UN wanted the new border to be. N. Korea refused.

  28. What did NOT help Eisenhower get elected? • Truman refused to run • He was a WWII hero • The handling of the Korean War up to 1952 • Nixon
