  7. DISCUSSIONGUIDE 1. Jesus asked the disciples what others said about His identity and received various answers (Luke 9:18-19). How do people today explain the identity of Jesus? A righteous man, a prophet, an outstanding teacher, the King of Kings.

  8. DISCUSSIONGUIDE 2. What is the significance of how Peter described Jesus? (v. 20) Both Christ and Messiah mean “one who has been anointed.”

  9. DISCUSSIONGUIDE 3. Why did Jesus emphatically tell the disciples to not tell anyone about His identity? (vs. 21-22) They did not understand the extent of the suffering and hardship that Jesus and His followers would have to endure and it was not yet time for Him to have to die on the cross.

  10. DISCUSSIONGUIDE 4. What does it mean to deny oneself and take up a cross daily? (vs. 23-26) To accept the rejection of the world. Discipleship involves a death that is like a crucifixion.

  11. DISCUSSIONGUIDE 5. How is (Luke 9:24-25) completely counter-cultural to our society today?

  12. DISCUSSIONGUIDE 6. What was Jesus referring to in (v. 27)? He is telling the disciples that some of them are about to get a glimpse of the Kingdom of God through the transfiguration. He was referring to the initial rather than the final phase.

  13. DISCUSSIONGUIDE 7. What was the significance of Jesus’ altered appearance for the disciples? (v. 29) They would have viewed this as an example of a glorified body. This transformation means the righteous will share the glory of God.

  14. DISCUSSIONGUIDE 8. What is the significance of Moses and Elijah appearing? (v. 30) Moses represented the prophetic office and Elijah was the prophet of end times.

  15. DISCUSSIONGUIDE 9. God appeared in the form of a cloud and declared that Jesus is His Son and for them to listen to Him. How would that change their lives? (v. 35)

  16. DISCUSSIONGUIDE 10. How has Jesus transformed your life?

  17. DISCUSSIONGUIDE 11. What is the greatest display of the glory of the Lord you have ever witnessed?

  18. DISCUSSIONGUIDE 12. Why was Jesus so upset with the disciples? (vs. 37-41) They still were not living in the power of God that they possessed. They still had doubts.

  19. DISCUSSIONGUIDE 13. Are you living in His power or in doubt as you encounter the circumstances of life?

  20. DISCUSSIONGUIDE 14. How did the disciples still show evidence that they did not fully understand in the following verses? a. (vs. 44-45) Jesus told them He would be betrayed and they could not grasp it b. (v. 46) They did not understand how Jesus viewed greatness c. (v. 47) The least shall be the greatest d. (vs. 49-50) They tried to stop a follower from healing, they did not understand the power of God

  21. DISCUSSIONGUIDE 15. Are you struggling to fully grasp the power of God living in you through the Holy Spirit? What needs to change in your life?

  22. Christ says, "Give me all. I don't want so much of your time and so much of your money and so much of your work: I want you. I have not come to torment your natural self, but to kill it. No half-measures are any good. I don't want to cut off a branch here and a branch there. I want to have the whole tree down. I don't want to drill the tooth, or crown it, or stop it, but to have it out. Hand over the whole natural self, all the desires which you think are innocent as well as the ones you think are wicked—the whole outfit. I will give you a new self instead. In fact, I will give you myself: my own will shall become yours." —C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

  23. Determination – Jesus knew His fate but was determined to complete the task before Him. (Luke 9:51) Perseverance – Determination over time brings perseverance. Jesus endured to the end. Great discipleship victories do not happen overnight. Courage – Courage comes from faith that God is in control no matter what. Jesus said it best on the night before His death in (John 16:33).
