The South African Wave Atlas

This study presents the development and implementation of a wave atlas model for South Africa, outlining the challenges faced and the way forward. The study identifies insufficient reference and physical processes data, as well as the impact of climate change on coastal vulnerability. The model utilizes input data from offshore waves/swell, bathymetry, and regional charts to estimate wave power potential under transitional/intermediate water depth conditions. The methodology is applied to specific regions, including Table Bay and False Bay, to provide insights into summer, autumn, winter, and spring wave characteristics. The study aims to publish a book on the wave atlas and expand the study to a 30-year hindcast with the CHPC.
