Workshop objectives • The workshop justification • observed incoherence and lack of preparedness of African delegates in international negotiations • impediments to getting an African position for a harmonized approach to implementation of the Cartagena Protocol • Major objective • To familiarize African delegates on Liability and Redress, and, risk assessment issues that will be decided upon at the MOP-5 meeting in October 2010, and build capacity for productive participation at the international event.

  3. Workshop objectives • Specific objectives • To share progress on implementation of the Cartagena Protocol and expose participants to the Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress • To create awareness about different approaches on Liability and Redress and their implications on Africa’s biotechnology development • To prepare country positions on Liability and Redress and other pending issues in the Protocol • To strengthen the mechanism for implementation of functional biosafety legislations and capacity for risk assessment in Africa

  4. Expected outcome •  A strong mechanism for implementation of functional biosafety legislation that facilitates development and trade with biotech crops • Exploration of issues of high relevance to Africa and possible alignment with like-minded regions with similar socio-economic situations

  5. MEETING EXPECTATIONS • More informed and Africa to speak with one voice • Understanding the political interest behind Liability and Redress • Establish Networks • Biotech / Biosafety updates
