OASIS: Open Architecture for Accessible Services Integration and Standardisation

OASIS is a large-scale project funded by the European Commission that aims to develop an open and innovative reference architecture for the independent and autonomous living of older people, enhancing their quality of life. The project focuses on providing personalized assistance, adapting to individual needs, and integrating various services for independent living, socialization, autonomous mobility, and smart workplaces.

  1. OASIS Project IntroductionOASIS at a glance Presented by Dr Evangelos Bekiaris – CERTH/HIT 10.10.2008 - Brussels

  2. Ageing population: facts • In absolute terms, the number of older persons has tripled over the last 50 years and will be more than triple again over the next 50-year period to reach nearly 2 billion in 2050. • Of all world regions, Europe has the highest proportion of population aged 65 or over; only Japan has a similar age structure. By 2050 the 65+ population will represent the 28% of the overall population in Europe (currently it is 16% in the EU15).

  3. The ageing of the population is changing also the workforce sce- nario in Europe: • currently the ratio between working people and retired ones is equal to 4:1; • drastic reduction of this ratio up to 2:1 in 2050.

  4. The elderly society barriers • Major deficiencies in assistance to the elderly in thetransportation modes, hampering their social and working activities. • Lack of appropriate retraining, lifelong learning activities, and tele-working infrastructure, causing unemployment among the senior workers or in any case problems in prolonging working life. • Social isolation is a common problem for senior people In addition to the age-related physical and cognitive problems, barriers to independence affecting the lives of elderly people include: The consequences of ageing population present enormous challenges and opportunities for ICT

  5. Level 4: Personal assistance where individual adaptation and individual assistive technology are not adequate. Level 3: Individual adaptation and individual assistive technology Level 2: Adaptation for groups with identical needs for adaptation. Level 1: Universal design should cover the needs of as many as possible. Approach

  13. The future of the devices Open Accessibility Everywhere: Groundwork, Infrastructure, Standards

  14. The future of the services Open architecture for Accessible Services Integration and Standardisation

  15. OASIS Mission Statement OASIS - a Large Scale Integrated Project partially funded by the European Commission - aims to develop anopen and innovative reference architecture, that will allow plug and play and cost-effective interconnection of existing and new services in all domains required for • theindependent and autonomous living of older people and - their enhanced Quality of Life. OpenarchitectureforAccessible ServicesIntegration and Standardisation

  16. OASIS aims to support older adults by fostering their physical and psychologicalindependence, by stimulating their socialengagement and their emotional wellbeing.

  17. OASIS data summary • EC co-funded project (ICT-FP7) • Coordinator: Philips FIMI (Italy) • Start/end date: 1 January 2008 - 31 December 2011 • Consortium: 33 Partners from 11 countries

  18. Portability of open platform Tablet PC – Philips/Fimi Smartphone / Motorola PDA / SIEMENS Automotive / CRF Domotic / DML Infokiosk / IBM

  19. OASIS application areas • INDIPENDENT LIVING • SOCIALIZATION • AUTONOMOUS MOBILITY • SMART WORKPLACES

  20. OASIS Independent Living Applications • Nutritional Advisor • Activity coach • Brain and skills trainer • Social communities platform • Health monitoring • Environmental Control

  21. OASIS Autonomous Mobility and Smart Workplaces Applications • Elderly friendly transport information services • New, elderly-friendly route guidance • Personal mobility • Smart workplaces applications

  22. COF / Hyper-Ontology / Repository Common Ontology Framework • defines a formal specification of ontology modules, and how they relate • defines a methodology and best practice for ontology construction specification guidelines this makes it possible to define a data structure +contents Hyper-Ontology • that acts like a single connected ontology, even though it is made up of possible heterogeneous modules software which can be stored, accessed and maintained within an Open Ontology Repository

  23. Common Ontology Framework Hyper-Ontology • versioning • meta-data registry • concept-concept • theory-theory • module-module Open Ontology Repository CCM Applications Interfaces Architecture

  26. Standardisation (1/2) • World-wide OASIS Industrial Forum aims to: • promote the OASIS Reference Architecture through standardisation, • manage the expansion of the OASIS COF by reviewing and accepting on a 6-month basis newly proposed ontologies and services connected temporarily at the lab-test environment of OASIS for at least 3 months, • maintain and upgrade the Ontology Management, AMI and Interaction Tools of the OASIS System.

  27. Standardisation (2/2) This Industrial Forum will be an open board without selection criteria. Any industry that wants to adopt, promote and expand OASIS Architecture will be welcome (with a small fee). Incentives of participation for the Industries include: • Free use of WP1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 tools for connections of services to OASIS Architecture. • Introduction to a rich world of services and sites for the new member services without having to change their Architecture. • Ability to influence the OASIS Architecture expansion. • Intercommunication and interoperability with other ventors services. Be part of it…

  28. Thanks for developing the OASIS systems and its services together with us. www.oasis-project.eu
