  1. A Suggestion For NeSSI Consideration • NeSSI has been successful with Generation 1 • NeSSI has struggled to achieve Generation 2 • Technical issues • Capability issues • Differing needs of participants • What can be done?

  2. Let the bus itself vary with different system suppliers. Specify the component electrical interface to the bus. Standard Interface to the substrate. Various methods of making substrates. An Analogy – and a Suggestion • NeSSI originally focused on the mechanical interface • We specified the interface point • We did NOT design how the substrates would be built! • Now, NeSSI could think the same way for the bus • Design the simple electronic physical connections:AO, AI, DO, DI, point-to-point serial • Allow the bus makers to provide the bus interface for the components as needed for each type of bus

  3. Comments: A Proposal for NeSSISome Problems • The NeSSI committee has focused on the serial bus • Reasons this has not been successful • Problems for component makers • They do not have “bus” knowledge • Problems for analyzer manufacturers • Different companies have different goals • Severe technical limitations delay implementation with existing standards • Problems for end users • Delays in acceptance • Unpredictable costs • Unpredictable parts and material plans for projects

  4. Comments: A Proposal for NeSSIA Possible Solution • Refocus NeSSI on the component-to-bus interface • Reasons this might be successful • Good for component makers • Simple electrical requirements – easy for component manufacturers • Component makers always have a standard design • Good for analyzer manufacturers • No conflict with existing bus standards • Avoids forcing all analyzer manufacturers to agree on the same bus • Permits different technical solutions • Allows analyzer manufacturer to use a public bus – or a private system if needed • Good for end users • Solutions move forward immediately • Minimal investment risk • Easy parts and project planning

  5. NeSSI-Standard Interface Component Mechanics How Might This Be Done? There are numerous possibilities….! Bus-specific electronics Component-specific electronics
