A Brief History of Me By Lindsay Thompson C&I 515 – Summer 2009
A little background on me . . . • I was born in Great Falls, but my family and I moved to Belgrade when I was four when my dad went back to Montana State University for his degree. • I have also lived in Bozeman, Missoula, Helena, and Pullman, WA. • Between moving and school closures, I attended five different elementary schools in only six years.
My education • I graduated as valedictorian from Capital High School in Helena in 2002. • I earned a BA with honors from Carroll College in History & Political Science in 2006. • I received an MA from Washington State University in American & East Asian History in 2008.
In my spare time, I like to . . . • Read • Play with my puppy • Play games with my family and friends • Spend time with my family
How did I get here? • I have always enjoyed helping people learn new things. • While I was a Teaching Assistant at Washington State University, I realized I enjoyed working with students more than researching, so I decided to switch gears from working to become a college professor to wanting to teach middle and high school. • To get more experience in the school system, I worked for a year for Montana GEAR UP, a program that helps students in impoverished areas learn about, get into, and finance college, which added to my desire to get out into the field and teach.
My inspirations. . . • One the biggest reasons behind me wanting to become a teacher were the teachers I had that inspired me to love learning no matter what the topic. History and social sciences won the ultimate battle, however! • Thank you, Dr. Bob Swartout and Mr. Jason Neiffer!
My goals as a teacher . . . • To help my students learn skills that will help them in school, college, career, and beyond. • To show others that history is more than dry facts and dates. • To teach students in a variety of mediums to keep them interactive and interested. • To give students a chance to shine in an areas they excel in. • To inspire my students to be the best person that they can be.
Working with Young People • While attending Capital High School, I was a teaching assistant for two years, the first in a U.S. history class and the second in a physics class. • During my years at Washington State University, I worked as a teaching assistant for a general education class (World Civilizations I & II) for four semesters, each time with a different professor.
Working with Young People at WSU • When I was a TA at WSU, I not only graded hundreds of papers, but also spent a lot of time helping students with questions and assignments. • I truly enjoyed watching them grow as students and giving them skills they could use throughout their college years and into their careers. • I wanted to help them evolve as students and people, as well as help them gain if not a love of history, at least an appreciation of it.
