  2. Our Fellowship More Than Just Cookies and Coffee Part 2. Our Response to those who teach apart from God’s Word What does God say is a problem the visible church will always have to face? 2 Timothy 4:3&4 1 John 4:1,5&6 Click to Continue What does God say is a problem the visible church will always have to face? 2 Timothy 4:3&4 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 1 John 4:1,5&6 Click to Continue What does God say is a problem the visible church will always have to face? 2 Timothy 4:3&4 1 John 4:1,5&6 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood. Click to Continue What does God say is a problem the visible church will always have to face? 2 Timothy 4:3&4 People will not always want to hear the truth but instead will turn to teachers who say only what their hearers want them to say. 1 John 4:1,5&6 There are many false prophets who are in the world. They speak from the viewpoint of the world and refuse to listen to the words of the apostles. Click to Continue God tells us the visible church will always have false teachers and prophets not teaching the true Word of God but instead teaching what people want to hear. Click to Continue

  3. Our Fellowship More Than Just Cookies and Coffee Part 2. Our Response to those who teach apart from God’s Word What is to be our response to false teachers? 2 John 9-11 Titus 3:10 Click to Continue What is to be our response to false teachers? 2 John 9-11 Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take him into your house or welcome him. Anyone who welcomes him shares in his wicked work. Titus 3:10 Click to Continue What is to be our response to false teachers? 2 John 9-11 Titus 3:10 Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. Click to Continue What is to be our response to false teachers? 2 John 9-11 We are not to welcome him or take him into our house. (We are not to let him teach us and we are not to support his/her ministry) Titus 3:10 We are to warn someone who is being divisive (not teaching as the church is teaching) and then we are to have nothing to do with him/her. Click to Continue We are to warn a false teacher and then have nothing to do with them. They are not to teach us and we are not to support their ministry. Click to Continue

  4. Our Fellowship More Than Just Cookies and Coffee Part 2. Our Response to those who teach apart from God’s Word What is always the goal of our actions? 1 Timothy 1:3-7 2 Timothy 2:23-26 Click to Continue What is always the goal of our actions? 1 Timothy 1:3-7 As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God’s work—which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm. 2 Timothy 2:23-26 Click to Continue What is always the goal of our actions? 1 Timothy 1:3-7 2 Timothy 2:23-26 Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will. Click to Continue What is always the goal of our actions? 1 Timothy 1:3-7 In love we are to tell others not to teach false doctrine but instead to have a pure heart, a good conscience and sincere faith. Titus 3:10 We are to instruct so we can lead others to repentance so that they will escape the devil. Click to Continue In love and with gentleness we are to instruct so that those who teach falsely will repent and will escape the devil’s traps. Click to Continue

  5. Our Fellowship More Than Just Cookies and Coffee Part 2. Our Response to those who teach apart from God’s Word Can any corruption or error be tolerated when it comes to God’s Word? Revelation 22:18-19 Galatians 1:6-9 Matthew 28:20 Click to Continue Can any corruption or error be tolerated when it comes to God’s Word? Revelation 22:18-19 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book. Galatians 1:6-9 Matthew 28:20 Click to Continue Can any corruption or error be tolerated when it comes to God’s Word? Revelation 22:18-19 God gives harsh punishments for anyone who would change part of his Word Galatians 1:6-10 Paul says that if someone brings news about Jesus (Gospel) different than his he should be eternally condemned. Matthew 28:20 Before Jesus ascended into heaven he tells his disciples to teach everything. Click to Continue Can any corruption or error be tolerated when it comes to God’s Word? Revelation 22:18-19 Galatians 1:6-9 Matthew 28:20 “Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Click to Continue Can any corruption or error be tolerated when it comes to God’s Word? Revelation 22:18-19 Galatians 1:6-9 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned! Matthew 28:20 Click to Continue God’s Word prescribes harsh punishment for anyone who would introduce error to his Word. We are to not tolerate any corruption or error either. Click to Continue

  6. Our Fellowship More Than Just Cookies and Coffee Part 1. The Nature of Church and Fellowship Homework Read the book of 3 John. (It’s very short) John encourages Gaius to show hospitality and to promote the ministry of the brothers who came for the sake of the Name in verses 5-8. On the other hand John tells Gaius to have nothing to do with Diotrephes because he opposes those who bring the true message. End of Part 2
