Henry Spencer Moore • Born: 30th July 1898, Castleford, Yorkshire • Died:31st August 1986, Hertfordshire, England • British Sculptor & Artist • Knew from age 11 that he wanted to be a sculptor • Fought in Army in World War 1 • First student of sculpture at Leeds School of Art • Adopted Surrealist Art work during the 1930’s • Was made War Artist during WW2 • Taught Sculpture and Art at the Royal College of Art • married Irina Radetsky (an Artist) in 1929 • Created the Henry Moore Foundation in 1977 to promote public art • and preserve his own work • Worked mostly on large scale abstract bronze sculptures and carved • marble • Most well known for sculpting pierced reclining figures
