Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS)
  • In 1990, the Secretary of Labor appointed a commission to determine the skills our young people need to succeed in the world of work.
  • The commission's fundamental purpose was to encourage a high-performance economy characterized by high-skill, high-wage employment.

College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Reading
  • The College and Career Readiness (CCR) anchor standards are designated by number.
  • The CCR and grade-specific standards are necessary complements—the former providing broad standards, the latter providing additional specificity—that together define the skills and understandings that all students must demonstrate.
