  4. The Big Transition… …may not be as challenging as you think. Your high school classes may have started to prepare you for college. But, if not, here are some words of advice from previous semesters CS 109 students who successfully completed the course.

  5. “A major difference is that in high school you don’t really get a detailed syllabus, & the professor creates them so students could get started on their projects early.” - Luis

  6. “In high school, we just learn knowledge from the class, if you learned well in class, you would be fine, but here you MUST read the book before the class.” - Yijin

  7. “Responsibility was one of the most important things I learned in this class. I definitely understand that teachers won’t be behind you, or calling your parents because I did not go to class. It all depends on you and your attitude.” - Manuel

  8. “In high school, most teachers would hold your hand. Announce when to take out paper and pens, what to take notes on, etc. In college, a lot of what may have been a teacher’s responsibilities is now on the students. It is up to the student to take notes, the student must follow the syllabus and turn in assignments on-time.” - Steven

  9. “College has so many different facilities available at various times. High school really only has a library. In college, we have: athletics facility, library, computer labs, writing workshops, tutoring, etc. These are only beneficial, and are there to help you as a student, and as a person. -Erik

  10. “You need to work hard to get information. It means, that you have to think and look outside of your own box.” - Menorwork

  11. “I have to turn in all my assignments on-time and typed on Microsoft Word.” -Enrique

  12. “In high school, most teachers just write stuff on the board, and tell you to copy it in your notebooks, but in college most teachers just give out lectures and you have to listen carefully and take notes as the professor speaks.” - Jorge

  13. “There are lectures, and some teachers don’t write things down that are important, but just speak.” - Henry

  14. “Promptness: it let me know that if I am not early, or on-time for a class, I just miss out, because the instructor will not go back over it, and that it is my responsibility to be there, not theirs.” - Mary

  15. “Thanks to the co-curricular activities, I was able to become more familiar with NEIU and what it offers. I learned about the Physical Education Complex, the Art Gallery, and other great options offered to me as a student.” - Jose

  16. “In college, you pick out your schedule, and it is easier for you to manage your time. In high school, you were given a schedule, and the days dragged on way more than in college. Also, semesters in college pass way faster than in high school, and before you know it, you are at the end of the semester.” -Dinka

  17. “Take it from me, from first-hand experience…in high school you can put things off until the last minute, and still get the job done well. But, if you do that in college and procrastinate…it’s MUCH HARDER. I learned that in college, you have to do more work and put more effort into it and not wait until the last minute. When you do so, you realize that the work isn’t actually that much.” - Michael

  18. “In college, keeping track of what assignments came next, instead of a teacher reminding you.” - Darlene

  19. “One of the things I am glad is, that you don’t have to ask permission to use the restroom, because, to me, before it was always so embarrassing to have to raise your hand and tell the teacher you need to use the restroom, and have to have a pass.” - Brian

  20. “One of the things that is different is the lifestyle. During high school, I would not have to worry about making friends and be socially active. However, in college, you need to take action, and get involved in the community on campus.” - Manuel

  21. “Money - in college, you are paying for your education. You don’t come here because you have to, you come here because you want to, and you don’t want to waste your money.” - Erik

  22. “As a college student, you have more freedom, but at the same time, more responsibilities. People go to high school because it is mandatory. You do not have to be here, YOU are responsible for your acts, not your parents. We, or at least I, am here because I want to get an Education and gained knowledge, not just a B.S.” - Enrique
