The Story Behind Hara Chair Mr Kim's motive of designing a chair was borne out of his desire to create a chair that moves with the body and is based on the theory of balance and movement. In l-ching, it is only with the constant movement of heaven and earth that there is life. The traditional chair is a non-moving product, and a living person sitting on a non-moving chair brings about corpulence and "death". Thus, the philosophy behind the Hara Chair was for it to move with the human being, so that the two moving elements promote balance and life. The paper clip was named the best invention of the 20th century, as it does its job of holding together pieces of paper and yet when the paper clip is removed, it does not damage the papers. The same goes for the Hara Chair - when it's "combined" with the human and when it's separate from the human, there is no detrimental effect on the human. The Hara Chair's birth was greatly inspired by the above "philosophies" and was continuously improved upon till 2006 when Mr Kim "perfected" the chair. "Hara"is the traditional / ancient Korean word for "Sun", which suggests life and energy. 2
