  5. Shareholders v executives • Shareholders are interested in • Increased capital value – rising share prices • Dividends – return on investment • Executives are interested in • Long term growth • Reinvestment of profits

  6. Apple • Apple had $164.5bn of cash (June 2014) • Apple want to keep it • Most of it is overseas • In they bring it back into the US it will be taxed • Shareholders ( Carl Icahn) want Apple to spend $50bn buying back shares • A big return on investment for the shareholders

  7. Customers v managers • Customers have expectations of products • Incremental improvements • Minimal retraining • Obvious utility and value • Managers want to: • Optimise development and product lines • Reduce support burden for legacy products • Minimise costs and maximise profits

Google v UK government • Google • paid £11.6m tax • UK revenues £3.4bn • Says Ireland office is responsible for sales • Government (Osborne) says • UK has some of the lowest business taxes in the world, • UK expect those taxes to be paid • UK will introduce a plan designed to stop multinationals from diverting profits offshore

Pluralistic examples • The Cooperative • Over 7 million members have a say in how The Co-operative is run, while earning points and a share of the profits • Open source software and collaborative software development • peer production by collaboration between developer and user • Kickstarter • People who back Kickstarter projects are offered tangible rewards and special experiences in exchange for their pledges
