  2. Module Enhancements • Use a “Boom box” to demonstrate amplified bass (low frequencies) and treble (high frequencies). • Introduce the math concepts of amplitude and its calculations. • Use the example of the Chicago sound detectors to explore the use of acoustics and triangulation.

  4. Scientific Inquiry • Have students make a bridge-like string instrument and explore how changing variables in the design affects the sound produced.

  5. Engineering Design • Have students design and build the best bridge-like string instruments.

  6. Ethics • Discuss the use of : • Audio surveillance devices (privacy issues). bugging devices and Big Brother concept • Voice recognition technology • What if someone steals (records) my voice and therefore my identity • Discuss the treatment of people with hearing impairment

  7. Modifications for K-3 • Create a KWL Chart • Word Wall vocabulary from the KWL, for example: sound, waves, vibrations, volume, and area • Discussion of the ethical treatment of the hearing impaired • Make a sound box: children create sounds from items in the box • Use the three forms of matter to show difference in sound and make tin can phones • Reinforce through literature on sound ~ write a connection: text-to-self, text-to-text, or text-to-world

Modifications 4-8 • Create a KWL Chart • Word Wall vocabulary from the KWL, for example: tone, bass, treble, frequencies, cycle • Discussion of the ethical treatment of the hearing impaired, music piracy • Make box guitars using different material • Web quest: Different types of music globally as well as instruments • Reinforce through literature on sound ~ write a connection: text-to-self, text-to-text, or text-to-world
