    1. Text-Free UI for Illiterate Users

    2. Text-Free UI Research Pilot Project based on design principles of Text-Free UI After a contextual, iterative, intensively user-centric ethnographic UI design process of almost living our lives with this slum community of domestic helpers, we designed an application about which I’ll play a movie now (Play Leba’s movie). Movie says, “Text-free user interfaces for illiterate and semi-illiterate users is an application designed at Microsoft Research India such that even novice illiterate users require absolutely no intervention from anyone at all to use. It is based on many hours of ethnographic design conducted in collaboration with a community of illiterate domestic laborers in 3 slums in Bangalore, to understand what kind of application subjects would be interested in, how they respond to computing technology and how they react to UI elements. The UI eliminates the need for text, users unabstracted cartoons versus simplified graphics, provides voice feedback for all functional units and provides a consistent help features and a movie dramatizing the purpose of the application. Results show that the text-free designs are strongly preferred over standard text –based interfaces by the communities which we address.”After a contextual, iterative, intensively user-centric ethnographic UI design process of almost living our lives with this slum community of domestic helpers, we designed an application about which I’ll play a movie now (Play Leba’s movie). 4. Can a user interface be designed such that any first time, illiterate user on first contact with a PC can immediately realize useful interaction? Hence the need arises for a platform which enables free flow of information by surpassing the barriers of literacy and computer skills – some attributes of only the privileged few in developing countries.Hence the need arises for a platform which enables free flow of information by surpassing the barriers of literacy and computer skills – some attributes of only the privileged few in developing countries.

    5. Income range is INR 800-2500 (USD 20-50) per month Most are illiterate or semi-literate Most have never seen a PC (those who have seen, see in their employers’ homes) Informal sector jobs After a contextual, iterative, intensively user-centric ethnographic UI design process of almost living our lives with this slum community of domestic helpers, we designed an application about which I’ll play a movie now (Play Leba’s movie). 7. A full-context video Liberal use of graphics and imagery; use of static hand-drawn representations with voice annotations Consistent “help” icon on all screens No use of text (numbers are okay) Voice feedback on all functional units Aggressive use of mouse-over functionality

    13. Optimal Audio-Visuals for UI Audio feedback had clear value: Representation types with audio were much better understood than the representation types without audio (Response time 30% less with audio than without) Static hand-drawn representations with audio best understood: Hand-drawn representations accompanied by voice annotation was the most accurately recognized (1% more accurate than animation with voice)

    14. Task completion/ Usability of app Full-context video had clear value: 100% completed the task, with an average of 4.7 prompts and 6.5 minutes completion time in the text-free UI with video version.

    15. UI 100% task completion after watching full-context video Richer information is not necessarily better understood overall The “help” instructions were a constant source of reassurance to users. Immediate comprehension of voice feedback For some, audio-visual cognitive coordination was difficult Navigation metaphor of a book helped

    16. Socio-economic, cultural Subject involvement among test subjects Collaborative use seemed more effective Socio-economic conditions correlated with cognition Test/text anxiety of subjects
