  3. Question: What do you want to know? • Scientists—like the fourth graders in this room—often begin with a question. Then, they conduct an experiment or investigation to find out more information. Our question is: Does soap float?

  5. Hypothesis • A hypothesis is a statement that can be tested. • “I predict if I. . . . Then,. . . • Example of hypothesis, “I predict if I put Lever 2000 soap into water it will sink. I predict Lever 2000 soap will be more dense than water.” • Write one hypothesis next to each type of soap on your recording sheet.

  7. Experiment Materials • What do you need to conduct your experiment or investigation? • We will need: Four kinds of soap, a large bowl, water and our recording sheets.

  9. Experiment Design-Steps of the experiment First, we will fill a bowl with water. Second, we will place one kind of soap into the water and record our observations. Third, we will repeat this experiment three more times using a different type of soap each time.

  16. Keeping Conditions The Same: This means you keep the materials and experiment design the same. Thought Question: When you repeat an experiment, why do you think it is important to keep conditions the same?
