  2. Purpose of Meeting • Starting point for communication throughout year • One/two/three to one meetings by halloween • For Parents • See the school, ask questions, meet teacher • For Teacher • Explain methodologies, outline activities • For Children • See connection between school and home

Work Programme • Based on Curriculum • Subject areas • Strands, strand units and objectives • Available on www.ncca.ie • Example: English Curriculum • Strand: Receptiveness to language • Units: Oral language, Reading, Writing • Strand: Competence and Confidence Using Language • Units: Oral language, Reading, Writing • Books as tools

  4. Subject Areas • Languages (Irish, English), Maths, SESE (Geography, History, Science), Arts Education (Art, Drama, Music), Physical Education, SPHE, Religious Education • Time per subject: recommendations • Time Table: based on recommendations • Extras: Sports, ICT as necessary/possible

  5. Homework • 5/6 items per night • 2/3 written, 2/3 learning more or less • Should be completed within 1hr 20 mins • If not, stop! • If unable to complete, show effort or alternative • If dragging on, try breaking up into three parts • Bonus work (optional always) – e.g Book Report

Classroom management • Stamps • Ten stamps for good work/behaviour earns one subject off homework • Stamps never taken away, not related to warnings • Warnings • Three warnings earns a standard/set sanction • Handwriting exercise (Reading, spelling, writing) • When three lost, begin again • No carry over of warnings day to day • Seating arrangements • One boy, one girl either side • Move weekly/fortnightly with group of four for optimum exposure

Methodologies • Independent learning • how to use skills to learn (learning to learn) • Differentiation • Same material for all, different results expected • Building self-confidence • Happy, safe, structure/environment to recognise and develop potential • Exploit potential • Build on what is known to develop knowledge: KWL

Mind and body • Healthy body, healthy mind • Diet growing in importance as bodies changing – Fruit/Veg and Water in class • Greater work load needs best source of energy • Clubs, Art classes, Cooking classes etc. • Sleep/Rest • Ensure getting full 8/9 hours sleep • Television/Playstations/Internet/Computers/ Phones/Facebook • Monitor for time and content

  9. Things to encourage • Reading: • Irish and English books • Library membership • Magazines, comics, anything that inspires reading • Moving from reading for knowledge to recreational reading stage • Writing • Free Writing Copy • Diary/Newspaper • Website, blog, wikis etc.

Up-Coming • Relationships andSexuality • Important that you have spoken about and continue to talk about the subject • Guidelines as to what level you should be discussing in curriculum (SPHE) • You are best placed to ensure no misinformation etc. • Confirmation • Talking about it • Going to mass • Bidding prayers • (2 pupils every Sunday Coosan Church)
