  4. Han Dynasty • 202 BC to 220 AD

  5. Han Dynasty • From about 202 BC to 8 AD • Western Han Dynasty, because the capital was in the west. • From about 23 AD to 220 AD • Eastern Han Dynasty, because the capital moved to the East

  6. Han Dynasty • Four hundred years of growth • Chinese territory expanded • Contact grew between China and Europe • Considered a model for all the dynasties that followed • Advancements in arts and technology • Economic growth

  7. Han - Important People • Emperor Wu Di • Inventor Zhang Heng

  8. Wu Di • Established peace • Encouraged trade • Strengthened government • Extended borders • Worked to strengthen Great Wall • Confucianism became official Chinese philosophy • Music became important

  9. Zhang Heng • Argued world wasn’t flat • Thought world revolved around the sun • Was an accomplished inventor and scientist

  10. Inventions • Paper, wheelbarrow, footstirrups and the seismograph (p. 32)

  11. Women • Women generally had very little power and were expected to do what they were told. • Majority were uneducated and unable to own property • Just a couple had some limited power in imperial families. • Sometimes the mother of a young ruler would wield some power.

  12. Han Dynasty • Practiced Confucianism • So what would have been important? • Patrolled and rebuilt China’s Great Wall • Trade flourished on the Silk Road
