  1. Using IEC 61850 and CIM for Disturbance Data Management Ralph Mackiewicz SISCO, Inc. 6605 19½ Mile Road Sterling Heights, MI 48314-1408 USA Tel: +1-586-254-0020 x103 Fax: +1-586-254-0053 Email: info@sisconet.com http://www.sisconet.com CIGRÉ 2014 – UCAIug Stand #370 26-27 August 2014

  2. Traditional COMTRADE Application • Individual engineers use stand-alone power system analysis tools to transfer and analyze COMTRADE disturbance data from IEDs. • After analysis and a potential corrective action what happens to the COMTRADE data: • Deleted • Files stored locally and isolated • The underlying power system data is not avialalbe outside the tool used for analysis

  3. A Better Way to Process COMTRADE

  4. The Role of IEC 61850 in COMTRADE Processing • Disturbance file presence detection: • IEC 61850 FileDirectory service polling • RDRE – Disturbance Recorder Monitoring • RDRE.ST.RcdMade (recording made) • RDRE.ST.FltNum (fault number)

  5. Central Generating Step-Up Station Transformer Distribution Receiving Distribution Gas Substation Station Substation Recip Turbine Engine Distribution Substation Commercial Micro- Recip Fuel turbine Engine cell Cogeneration Photo voltaics Industrial Commercial Batteries Flywheel Residential Role of CIM in COMTRADE Processing • The IEC Common Information Model (CIM) is used to define the power system and its assets • CIM is imported into the historian where COMTRADE is processed • Enables disturbance data is associated to the assets impacted • Enables events to be associated to the disturbance file for later retrieval CIM

  6. Relating the Disturbance File to the Asset Using CIM Disturbance File Definition CIMTransformer Definition Link events to one or more assets enabling analysis of disturbance impact on an asset basis

  7. Original Files Archived as Part of an Event and the Asset

  8. COMTRADE Utility for PI • All disturbance files are transferred automatically and archived in the PI historian. • Disturbance data from COMTRADE files is extracted and store in PI along with all other power system data. • Using CIM with PI Asset Framework (PI AF) enable related of disturbance files to the asset and an event. • Data can be exported into COMTRADE file for sharing with others (e.g. synchrophasors).
