  2. Societal Topics Weeks 7 and 8 • Internet Regulation Internet regulation is restricting or controlling access to certain aspects or information online . Many believe that the internet should remain open so that people can create new things freely. Many lawmakers are pushing to prevent the regulations on the internet . • Internet Governance Internet governance is the coordination of technical standards, the operation of critical infrastructure, development, regulation, and legislation. This has been a very controversial topic based on people’s basic rights, whether or not the government is allowed to interfere .

  3. Societal Topics Weeks 9 and 10 • IPv6- IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is the latest revision of the Internet Protocol (IP), the primary communications protocol upon which the entire Internet is built. It is intended to replace the older IPv4 since it will eventually run out of addresses. Each device on the Internet needs an IP address to communicate with other devices. • Net Neutrality- New neutrality is in place to let people have control over what they do on the internet. They have created this so that the viewer of the website has complete control over what they can view as long as it is lawful. I believe that this is a good idea and no one’s rights are violated. • Windows 8 Windows 8 is an operating system produced by Microsoft for use on personal computers. Development of this operating system started in2009, and was first announced in January 2011. On August 1, 2012, Windows 8 was released to manufacturing and is scheduled to be released on October 26, 2012. • Routing Autonomous Systems Within the Internet, an Autonomous System (AS) is a collection of connected Internet Protocol (IP) routing prefixes under the control of one or more network operators that presents a common, clearly defined routing policy to the Internet. A unique ASN is allocated to each AS for use in BGP routing. AS numbers are important because the ASN uniquely identifies each network on the Internet.

  4. Societal Topics Week 11, 12, and 13 • Privacy- With all the technology now a day it seems impossible to keep your privacy online. You don’t know what sits to trust and to give your information out to. If your information was given out wrongly you have the right to go after anyone who commits wrongdoing online. • Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)- Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the protocol which makes core routing decisions on the Internet. There is a table of IP networks that give network reach-ability to autonomous systems (AS). It’s a routing protocol. BGP doesn’t use Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) metrics, but makes routing decisions based on path, network policies and/or rule-sets. • Spam- Spamming is still done because advertisers have no costs beyond the management of their mailing lists. Since it isn’t hard to spam, the volume of unsolicited mail has become very high. In 2011, the estimated amount of spam messages is around seven trillion. Spamming has been the subject of legislation in many jurisdictions. • MOOC- A massive open online course (MOOC) is a type of online course aimed at large-scale participation and open access via the web. Though the design of and participation in a MOOC may be similar to college or university courses, MOOCs usually don’t pay but offer certification after an assessment of learning is complete. • Security- Everyone has the use to use the internet however malicious activities abuse the freedom of the internet. With denial of service attacks, spam, viruses and phishing scams cause damage and interference to everyone that is trying to correctly trying to use the internet. • Standardization- The Internet is fundamentally based on the existence of open, non-proprietary standards. The internet society is always working to improve the standards of freely accessible specifications, unencumbered, open development, and always evolving. This ensures that the internet will always become better and hopefully one day is without problems.
