This term comes from a surcoat being worn by noble men over their armours which later on became their identity. The term “coat of arms” came from the previously used ‘surcoat’. Avoiding friendly fire The coat of arms were not deigned to decorate the warriors but for recognition. When the knights used to fight the armours used to look very much similar in a fast paced battle. Due to this reason people started to bring in coat of arms to differentiate between the different knights in the battle field. A sign of valour Although at first the coat of arms was only intended for the kind of the ruler and then people who served the king could wear a variation of this type of coat of arms, it soon became very common and almost every household started to have one. It has become almost like an identification symbol. However coat of arms was also awarded to other people for their valour and bravery from time to time.
