Types of depression Major Depressive Disorder It’s estimated that 16.2 million adults in the United States, or 6.7 percent of American adults, have had at least one major depressive episode in a given year. Persistent Depressive Disorder Persistent depressive disorder, or dysthymia, is chronic low-level depression that’s lower in severity than major depression and lasts two years or longer. Bipolar Disorder The disorder involves the development of a manic, or energized mood, episode. Sometimes, these may be preceded or followed by episodes of depression. 

  3. What is EMDR Therapy? Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy, also known as EMDR Therapy, is a form of psychotherapy designed to help people heal from extremely traumatic life events. EMDR therapy will help reduce the emotional distress, panic attacks, anxiety and other serious symptoms that most people experience after undergoing a disturbing experience in their life.

  4. How EMDR Therapy Works EMDR therapy is based upon the principles of the Adaptive Information Processing Model. The Model posits that we experience an event and feel the emotions associated with that event and then store the memory of that event in the brain and later we can reflect back upon the event with an objectivity provided by time. However, when a traumatic event occurs, there is so much emotion attached to the event that frequently a person cannot possibly feel and process all of the emotion in that moment.  From the safety of the present, EMDR allows a patient to revisit the past trauma so they can feel and work through the difficult and overwhelming emotion stored with the memory

  5. What makes EMDR Therapy Different? EMDR stimulates both hemispheres of the brain to assist the patient in marshalling forth their full mental capacity to work through their issues. EMDR not only assists patients in working through the difficult emotions that accompany trauma but also assists in identifying and correcting the negative cognitions that patients frequently tell themselves as a result of the trauma.

  6. How long does EMDR Therapy take? Meaningful change can often be seen within two to six therapy sessions for those with a single episode of trauma. If the patient has experienced multiple traumas over their lifetime or has a co-occurring diagnosis like a substance use disorder or a dissociative disorder, progress will be slower depending the amount of trauma experienced and/or upon on the severity of the co-occurring issues.
