  1. EMDRTherapy EMDRstandsforeyemovementdesensitizationandreprocessing. Itisaformofpsychotherapy thatreliesoneyemovementstohelpreprogramthebrain.FrancineShapirodevelopedEMDR therapy in 1989. Shenoticed thatwhile she recalled a stressful thought,her eyes moved involuntarily. When shebroughtthemovements under voluntary control,she becameless anxious. Stressfuleventsareknowntoadverselyaffectmanypeople.EMDRisbasedonthetheorythat persistent,prolongedreactionstotraumaareduetopartiallyorentirelyunprocessedmemories. EMDR isbelieved toberelatedtotheRapidEyeMovement(REM) thatoccurs during deep sleep. Through asimilar process toREM sleep, EMDR isthoughttorelease and assistintheprocessingoftraumaticmemories.Itisbelievedtohelpalleviatetraumasymptomsandisoften usedtotreatPostTraumaticStressDisorder. EMDRhasalsobeenusedtotreatpanicattacks, phobias,stress, and addiction. People often believeemotionaltraumatakesalong timeto resolve. EMDRtherapistsbelieve the mindcanhealfromtraumamuchasthebodyrecoversfrominjury. Whenthebodyisinjuredit willrecover;ifsomething remainsinthewound, or re-injury occurs, the wound won’t heal. Healing can happen, oncetheblockageisremovedfromthewound. Practitioners believeEMDR isthe instrumentthatcan clear the blockagefromamentalinjury. EMDR patientsarefirstasked torecallatraumaticeventor image. Next,thepractitioner performsdifferentkindsofsensoryinput,suchashandtappingorside-to-sideeyemovements duringpartofthesession. TheEMDRtherapistpinpointsamemorytoserveasastartingpoint and continuesperformingtherapythrough eyemovementsand othersensorystrategies. EMDRtherapyhaseightphases. Inthefirstphase,patientsareaskedaseriesofquestionsto obtain a patient history. In the next phase, the practitioner assesses the client’s coping mechanisms and emotionalsupport systems.In phases 3 through 6, thepractitioner targets specificmemoriesfor EMDR treatment.In thesephases, theclientisasked torecallavivid image, anegativeself-belief, and any related emotionsor body sensations. Then theclient formulatesapositivebelief. Phasesevenisclosure. Clientsareaskedtokeepalogduringthe week. Thepractitioner examines the patient’s progress in phase eight. ManypatientsreportdecreasedanxietyfromEMDRtherapy. StudieshaveshownthatEMDR producedeffectssimilartoCognitiveBehavioralTherapy. EMDRtherapy,likeotherformsof psychotherapy,maycreateashort-termtemporaryincreaseinanxiety. Sometimesupsettingor unresolvedmemoriesre-emerge.
