Understanding the Rock Cycle: Diagram and Processes

The rock cycle involves the formation, breakdown, and transformation of rocks through various processes like igneous rock formation, weathering, erosion, sedimentation, heat, and pressure. This diagram illustrates these processes with arrows indicating the sequential changes in rock types. Learn about metamorphic rocks and the dynamic nature of the Earth's crust. Prepare for a test on plate tectonics and volcanic formations by reviewing key textbook concepts and answering questions on rock formation.

  1. Review of Rocks

  2. Can you draw the following information as a diagram with arrows representing the processes that cause rocks to form or break down or change?

  3. Igneous rocks Formed by lava or magma cooling intrusively or extrusively.

  4. Weathering and Erosion Break down Igneous rocks (and other rock types) into sediments.

  5. Sedimentary Rocks Sediments are compacted and cemented together to form Sedimentary Rocks

  6. Heat and Pressure When rocks are subjected to heat and pressure, they change.

  7. Metamorphic Rocks Metamorphic Rocks are rocks that have changed because they have been subjected to heat and pressure.

  8. What other arrows do we have to add to our diagram?

  9. The Rock Cycle!

  10. Chapter Review Pg. 311 of textbook Questions 1, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12, 16, 19, 20 Go back over your work on plate tectonics and formation of volcanoes. Test on Tuesday next week
