  1. L4 – Charities • Learning Objectives: • Analyse what motivates people to give to different charities • Evaluate whether taxes should be increased to reduce the need for charities Have you given any money to charity in the last 6 months? Which charity? Why?

  2. How many charities can you name?

  3. Are you more likely to give money to charities for… • People, animals or the environment? • Old or young? • British or international? Task: In your group, rank the charities in order of which you think you are more likely to give money to. Most likely to give money Quite likely to give money Quite likely to give money Least likely to give money Least likely to give money Least likely to give money

  4. Task Your group has 10 minutes to prepare some reasons why people should give money to your charity. You will have only 1 minute to convince us. You may include… • Mock interviews with people affected • Rap/Song/Jingle • Role play • Persuasive speech • Any other idea

  5. Time to vote…

  6. Review • Did the overseas charities do better or worse than the UK ones? Why might this be? • Were the results very different from the initial ranking they did in groups? What made people change their minds? • Do we choose charities from the best motives? • Can you think of any real charities that are the same as these fictitious ones?

  7. Some charities listed below have aims similar to those of the fictional charities. 8. Homework: “We should pay higher taxes so we can help everyone. Do you agree?” (12 marks)

  9. “We should pay higher taxes so we can help everyone.” Do you agree? (12 marks) You will always have a 12 mark essay in the Citizenship exam (Part C). You should spend 20 minutes on this. Tip: complete the essay first.

  10. Structure of Essay Introduction: You should introduce the topic and discuss your aim for the essay (what your conclusion will decide). In this essay I will be discussing whether people should pay higher taxes so that we can help everyone, concluding whether it should or should not be introduced.

  11. Structure of Essay Arguments For : • You should: • State your point (Some people would agree it is right because…) • Explain it (Because…) • Use an example (For example…) • Link back to your point (This shows…) Some people would agree that we should pay higher taxes because there are lots of people still living in poverty. For example, there are lots of people who are homeless and living on the streets. This shows that way that public money is currently allocated is insufficient, so we should pay higher taxes.

  12. Structure of Essay Arguments Against: • You should: • State your point (Other people say we should not…) • Explain it (Because…) • Use an example (For example…) • Link back to your point (This shows…) Other people would disagree that we should pay higher taxes because people should learn to look after themselves and not rely on benefits. For example, there are thousands of people unemployed in Britain and living off benefits. This shows that there is a culture of reliance on benefits so we should not pay higher taxes as it will encourage this culture.

  13. Structure of Essay Conclusion: You should recap your reasons for and against raising taxes and conclude whether you think it is right or wrong. In conclusion, I have discussed many reasons for and against raising taxes. However, I believe they should be raised as we have a duty and responsibility to look after those who are less fortunate than ourselves.
