  10. Wednesday, Dec 4 Lesson 6.7 Equivalent Expressions

  11. Equivalent Expressions Objective: To understand how to use properties to simplify expressions.

  12. Equivalent Expressions At the end of this lesson you should be able to answer the following question. How can properties help you write equivalent algebraic expressions?

  13. Equivalent Expressions A termcan be a single number, a variable or single numbers and variables multiplied together. e.g. 5(4x + 4) This expression has 3 terms.

  14. Equivalent Expressions A coefficient is the numerical factor of a term that contains a variable. e.g. 5(4x + 4) In this expression there is only one term that has a variable and the coefficient is 4.

  15. Equivalent Expressions A term without a variable is called a constant. e.g. 5(4x + 4) Constants.

  16. Equivalent Expressions Like terms are terms that contain the same variable. Only like terms can be added or subtracted. e.g. 4x + 6 + 5x Like terms

  17. Equivalent Expressions Simplify Expressions With One Variable Simplify the expressions 6(4x) According to the Associative Property if an expression has all multiplication or addition, we can remove the parenthesis. 6 · 4 · x Can we perform any operation?

  18. Equivalent Expressions Simplify Expressions With One Variable Simplify the expressions 6(4x) 6 · 4 · x = 24 · x = 24x

  19. Equivalent Expressions Simplify the expression 11(3x) Do this on your own.

  20. Equivalent Expressions Simplify the expression 11(3x) 11 · 3 · x = 33 · x = 33x

  21. Equivalent Expressions Simplify the expression x + x + x Do this on your own.

  22. Equivalent Expressions Simplify the expression x + x + x x + x + x = 3x When adding like terms, add the coefficients.

  23. Equivalent Expressions Simplify the expression 5x + 3x + 6x Do this on your own.

  24. Equivalent Expressions Simplify the expression 5x + 3x + 6x 5x + 3x + 6x = 14x

  25. Equivalent Expressions Simplify Expressions With Two Variables. Simplify the expression (14y + x) + 22y According to the Associative Property if an expression has all multiplication or addition, we can remove the parenthesis. 14y + x + 22y Can we perform any operation?

  26. Equivalent Expressions Simplify Expressions With Two Variables. Simplify the expression (14y + x) + 22y 14y + x + 22y 36y + x Remember you can only add or subtract like terms.

  27. Equivalent Expressions Simplify the expression 3x + 9y + 2x Do this on your own.

  28. Equivalent Expressions Simplify the expression 3x + 9y + 2x 3x + 9y + 2x = 5x + 9y

  29. Equivalent Expressions Simplify the expression 4(2x + y) Do this on your own.

  30. Equivalent Expressions Simplify the expression 4(2x + y) 4(2x + y) = 4 ·2x + 4 · y = 8x + 4y

  31. Equivalent Expressions Translate the verbal expression into an algebraic expression. Then simplify the expression. The sum of five and a number is added to 30.

  32. Equivalent Expressions Translate the verbal expression into an algebraic expression. Then simplify the expression. The sum of five and a number is added to 30. add 5 to a variable and then add that to 30

  33. Equivalent Expressions Translate the verbal expression into an algebraic expression. Then simplify the expression. The sum of five and a number is added to 30. add 5 to a variable and then add that to 30 (5+x) + 30 = x + 35

  34. Equivalent Expressions Translate the verbal expression into an algebraic expression. Then simplify the expression. Four sets of the sum of a number and three are added to the sum of five times the same number and ten. Do this on your own.

  35. Equivalent Expressions Translate the verbal expression into an algebraic expression. Then simplify the expression. Four sets of the sum of a number and three are added to the sum of five times the same number and ten.

  36. Equivalent Expressions Translate the verbal expression into an algebraic expression. Then simplify the expression. Four sets of the sum of a number and three are added to the sum of five times the same number and ten. 4(x + 3)

  37. Equivalent Expressions Translate the verbal expression into an algebraic expression. Then simplify the expression. Four sets of the sum of a number and three are added to the sum of five times the same number and ten. 4(x + 3)

  38. Equivalent Expressions Translate the verbal expression into an algebraic expression. Then simplify the expression. Four sets of the sum of a number and three are added to the sum of five times the same number and ten. 4(x + 3) +

  39. Equivalent Expressions Translate the verbal expression into an algebraic expression. Then simplify the expression. Four sets of the sum of a number and three are added to the sum of five times the same number and ten. 4(x + 3) +

  40. Equivalent Expressions Translate the verbal expression into an algebraic expression. Then simplify the expression. Four sets of the sum of a number and three are added to the sum of five times the same number and ten. 4(x + 3) +(5x + 10)

  41. Equivalent Expressions Translate the verbal expression into an algebraic expression. Then simplify the expression. Four sets of the sum of a number and three are added to the sum of five times the same number and ten. 4(x + 3) + (5x + 10) = 4x + 12 + 5x +10 = 9x + 22

  42. Equivalent Expressions Translate the verbal expression into an algebraic expression. Then simplify the expression. Two sets of a sum of a number and five are added to six times the same number. Do this on your own.

  43. Equivalent Expressions Translate the verbal expression into an algebraic expression. Then simplify the expression. Two sets of a sum of a number and five are added to six times the same number. 2(x + 5) + 6x = 2x + 10 + 6x = 8x +10
