  2. Why? THINK BIG! • Landmines are still a big problem in Vietnam • `The Robots are coming’ (or have already arrived :-) • RMIT has two campuses in Vietnam RMIT is ‘global, urban and connected’ ‘… should aim for a project of $10 million over 5 years …’ 29th November, 2012

  3. 29th November, 2012 Landmines in Vietnam • 42,000 people killed by landmines in the past 35 years (2009 study) • 35% of land in six central provinces contain mines • In one district, 300 children killed and 58 blinded or lost limbs • 65-70 million landmines worldwide

  6. 29th November, 2012 RMIT Vietnam • Initial contact made with Prof. Serge Demidenko • Potential interaction with BOMICEN (Vietnamese government mine clearance institute) and DSTO • Maintenance and Training base? • Train clearance teams in up-to-date technologies • Maintenance base for robots? • Research base for robots and other technologies? • Potential for major centre in mine clearance in SE Asia region (Laos, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, …)
