  1. Oscar the GrouchTEAM A By: Scott Davidson Chris Johnson Chris Peng Patrick Randazzo

  2. Background • Oscar, for those precious few of you out there who've never watched Sesame Street, is a furry green monster with bushy eyebrows who lives in a trash can. He's normally grumpy and cantankerous, but he is capable of outbursts of joy, usually brought on by a rotten fish, a rusted can, or some other piece of garbage that he's found. Viewed from a different angle, Oscar is one of Jim Henson's Muppets, performed by Caroll Spinney ever since Sesame Street hit the airwaves in 1969.

  3. Oscar Family Photos A rare photograph of the Oscar’s alleged cousin: Ostrowski the Grouch Oscar the Grouch

  4. Hardware • Actuation • RC Servomotor (Mouth) • Geared DC Motor (Neck) • Sensors • PSD • Switch (Door Bell) • Phototransistor • Display • LED’s

  5. Hardware • Power • 5 VDC (Servo, Stamp, Electronics) • 12 VDC (DC motor) • BASIC Stamp 2 • Robust Wiring Design

  6. Basic Assembly

  7. Styrofoam head----- Basic Assembly PSD (not modeled)------------ Servomotor----------- Styrofoam mouth 3/4 wooden dowel---------- Phototransistor (housed by a pen cap) 2 x LED---------------------- Dowel support-------------- 12V motor-------------------- Motor mount (Campbell chicken soup can) 2 x Motor brackets-------- Trash can (unshaded)--------------

  8. Mouth Actuation A servo is embedded in the Styrofoam and the mouth is held by paperclips 5 degrees 50 degrees 90 degrees

  9. Position of Neck Motor LED Phototransistor (held in a pen cap) The motor detects its position by two LED’s placed at the left and right of the dowel. When the dowel spins and goes over one of the LED’s a phototransistor will detect the lit LED’s. The Stamp will then reverse the motor’s direction

  10. Functions • Modes • Find a Friend Mode • Chat Mode • Sleep Mode • Interaction • Door Bell • Talking with Oscar • Counting Mode (Talking to Oscar)

  11. Sleep Mode

  12. Find-a-Friend Mode

  13. Chat Mode

  14. Design Challenges • Actuation of Neck – Servo vs DC motor • Position Control of Neck (HW and SW solutions) • Locating Parts (Trash Can)

  15. Budget Provided Components:

  16. Budget Purchased Components:

  17. Demonstration

  18. Things We would have Done Differently • Time and Budget were the major constraints • Sensors • Microphone • Better Positioning Sensors • Interaction • Speaker • Moving Eyebrows • Different Type of Motor • Smaller Scale
