Order of OperationsVocabulary • Order of Operations - The correct order in which to perform the mathematical operations in a numerical expression. • Why do we need the Order of Operations? • It makes mathematics consistent by allowing any person to solve any expression and get the same solution.
The Order of Operations… 1. Parentheses(or anything grouped together) 2. Exponents 3. Multiplication and Division 4. Addition and Subtraction When doing multiplication and division or addition and subtraction… Work from left to right!

Order of OperationsWatch Out! • If there is more than one operation inside of parentheses use the Order of Operations to determine what to do first within the parentheses. • Example: • What should we do first? • The exponent inside of the parentheses: 23= 8 • What would come second? • Multiplication inside of the parentheses: 4(8) = 32
Order of OperationsWatch out! • If the expression looks like a fraction imagine that the numerator and denominator are grouped separately… • First simplify the numerator. • Second simplify the denominator. • Last divide the numerator by the denominator.
Example: Solve separately… Solve separately… 30 – 4(8 – 3) + 17 1 + 23 30 – 4(5) + 17 30 – 20 + 17 10 + 17 = 27 1 + 8 = 9 3
To remember the Order of Operations just think of… The acronym… “GEMDAS” (instead of Parentheses think… GROUPING SYMBOLS!) Or the Mnemonic Device: “GreatlyExcuse My Dear Aunt Sally” • Do not forget that Multiplication/Division and Addition/Subtraction are the same step – and to solve by simplifying from left to right!
