  1. Christ The God-Man Grappling With Jesus' Nature in Church History and Scripture Part I: The Nicene Creed

  2. The Nicene Creed [Webelieve]inoneLordJesusChrist,theonlySonofGod,begottenfromtheFatherbeforeallages,GodfromGod,LightfromLight,trueGodfromtrueGod,begotten,notmade;ofthesameessenceastheFather.Throughhimallthingsweremade.Forusandforoursalvationhecamedownfromheaven;hebecameincarnatebytheHolySpiritandthevirginMary,andwasmadehuman.

  3. Council of Nicea Summoned in A.D. 325 by the Holy Roman Emperor Constantine. Gathering of bishops from across the empire. One of their chief issues of concern and discussion was the Arian controversy.

  4. Arianism Promoted by Arius, a presbyter of the Alexandrian church in Egypt. Taught that, “There was a time when the Son was not”

  5. Arius: Villain or Reckless Reactionary? Arius' doctrine seemed to be a reaction against what he perceived as the preaching of Sabellianism (modalism). Modalism: The one God manifests Himself in three forms or modes: Father, Son, Spirit. There are not three distinct persons. Modalism is held by Oneness Pentecostals today.

  6. A Matter of Substance The Council of Nicea rejected Arius' teaching and labeled him a heretic. Arius said Jesus was of “like substance” with the Father: homoiousios The Council said that Jesus was of the “same substance” as the Father: homoousios

  7. Arius' Arsenal “I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to me, 'You are my Son; today I have begotten you.'” Psalm 2:7

  8. Arius' Arsenal He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. Colossians 1:15

  9. Arius' Arsenal “You heard me say to you, 'I am going away, and I will come to you.' If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.” John 14:28

  10. Arius' Arsenal And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. John 17:3

  11. Arius' Arsenal For although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth—as indeed there are many “gods” and many “lords”—yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. 1 Corinthians 8:5-6

  13. Implications of Arianism Can Christ save us if He is less than truly God? Can Christ be worshiped if He is less than truly God?

  14. Support for Jesus' Divinity For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6

  15. Support for Jesus' Divinity As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep.... I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord GOD.....And I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. Ezekiel 34:12, 15, 23

  16. Support for Jesus' Divinity “'Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.' So the Jews said to him, 'You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?' Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.' So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.” John 8:48-59

  17. Support for Jesus' Divinity “Philip said to him, 'Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.' Jesus said to him, 'Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.'” John 14:8-11

  18. Support for Jesus' Divinity “For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.” Colossians 1:19

  19. Support for Jesus' Divinity He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. Hebrews 1:3

  20. Support for Jesus' Divinity And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God's angels worship him.” Hebrews 1:6 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.” Revelation 22:8-9

  21. Support for Jesus' Divinity But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.” Hebrews 1:8

  22. Support for Jesus' Divinity [Melchizedek] is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling* the Son of God he continues a priest forever. Hebrews 7:3 *or “having been made like”

  23. In Conclusion “Is the task of Christology complete? By no means! We cannot content ourselves with merely repeating the words and phrases of the past till the day of [Christ's coming]...Besides, Christology constantly faces new challenges and each such challenge both changes and enriches us. There is the need, in every age, to discharge afresh Christology's obligation to preach. How do we translate homoousios and perichoresis into the plain English of today? The fourth century theologians ransacked their world for appropriate images. We must find ours in the world of singularities, quarks, black holes and electromagnetism...The task goes on then. Generations to come will ask different questions and use different language. In that sense Christology never arrives. Born of a living relationship with the Divine Son it remains, eternally, a Christological viatoris [pilgrimage].” -Donald Macleod, The Person of Christ
